Investigations revealed that Malaby had been attempting to take photos or video of other people shooting guns and stepped in the line of fire. He was struck by a bullet from a .40 caliber pistol.  Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

WTF? If it was pistols, that means the shooters definitely knew photographer was there - why did they continue to shoot if he was down range?

To the best of my understanding that area is kind of out there and isn't likely to be a formal range.
So it could have been a mixed line pistols/ rifles. Worst case it was just a natural berm a bunch of guys were shooting into. Either way it was an ate up situation that I'm not all that surprised about. |

The boy was out there shooting his new Rem in 300 RUM back in a corner away from everyone, running a ladder at 300 yards when some idiot drove right up to the targets in his beater car, jumped out and grabbed the fresh targets....guy jumps back in his car starts to pull a u-turn and figures out the boy and his buddies were using said targets..so he stops jumps back out of his vehicle and trys to rehang the targets before piling back into his car and hauling ass out of the area...

I shot there probably 3 hours after this happened, unawares. Last time there was a range death in a place like this, they shut the whole thing down to target shooting. That was a huge loss to me because it was close to my house. Jonesville in Sutton is my replacement. Camping, wheeling, shooting, tannerite.... |

According to some where I work someone has made it into a real range now. I'll believe it when I see it. I still bet it was mixed so someone was probably firing his new gat at the "range". His buddy decides to get some sweet action shots in front of the firing line. Someone's break startles him or he falls getting into position and comes right into line as someone is squeezing off rounds on their glock fortay. |

Compartmentalized attention on the part of both the shooter and photographer, most likely.
This is why even if you are target shooting in an open field with more than one person, you need something physical to represent a firing line so that nobody inadvertently steps too far back or forward placing someone in danger of facing a muzzle. |
