Get a permanant magnet off your fridge. Drag it along the length of the screwdriver a few times. Viola

I feel like dragging either magnets or a screwdriver along a viola would probably be pretty hard on the finish.

Buy one?

Seriously, a harbor freight you can get one for <$2.00.

I have craftsmans that aren't...but Dewalts that are :)

ETA: Mother fucking fuck...I wasted 17000 telling someone to buy a tool at Harbor Freight...FML.

Fucking Google it:

A 9-volt
battery is an ideal battery for magnetizing a small screwdriver. It's
small and easy to move around; you can even tape the battery to the
handle of the screwdriver. Importantly, no other battery, that's
relatively inexpensive, produces nine volts. Magnetizing a small
screwdriver is a great way to introduce magnetism and basic physics to
your children while providing entertainment and at the same time making a
useful magnetic device.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver with a metal shaft at least four inches long and a nonconducting handle at least two inches long

  • Uninsulated AWG 18-gauge wire

  • Wire cutters

  • 9-volt battery

  • Electrical insulating tape

  • Scissors

  • Wind uninsulated AWG 18-gauge wire tightly around the shaft of the
screwdriver. Start about one-half inch from the handle. Leave three
inches of wire free at the end where you start winding.

  • Stop winding the wire when you get one-half inch from the tip of the
screwdriver. Cut the wire with wire cutters, leaving enough wire to
reach back up to the handle.

  • Place a 9-volt battery next to the screwdriver handle, ensuring the
battery terminals face toward the shaft of the screwdriver. Wrap
electrical insulating tape around the screwdriver handle and the battery
to hold the battery firmly on the handle. Use scissors to cut the tape.

  • Wrap the end of one wire near the handle around one of the 9-volt
battery terminals. Wrap the end of the other wire around the other
battery terminal. Use electrical insulating tape to hold the wires in
place. Your screwdriver will be magnetized.

Or just stick a magnet on the tip for a few.

Take apart old computer hard drives-they have very strong magnets in them.

OP you just need to microwave it on medium for about 30 seconds.

Don't mind the sparks, its just a byproduct of the process.

That's the unmagnetic molecules being driven out. When you are finished, all that's left are magnetic molecules.

You have a Weller solder gun? Put a soldering tip in it.

You can turn on the solder gun, insert the screwdriver tip between the electrodes and then shut off the solder gun.

To demagnetize, insert the screwdriver in between the electrodes, turn on the gun and slowly remove the screw driver.

Yeah, that's all well and good, but what do you use when you want to magnetize a flat-blade screwdriver???

A demagnetizer should be standard for any workshop. They're only like 50 bucks.

You can also magnetize with them.

You can demagnetized a screwdriver by smacking it pretty good against a hard object. The oscillations cause the flux lines to quickly pass through each other and cancel one another out. Gets it about 90% demagnetized.
