I operated on a patient yesterday and just now got a call from the ER. They told me that the patient is there being seen. When I asked what was wrong I was told " I am sorry, but HIPPA laws say I can't tell you" WTF I am only the FUCKING SURGEON , so this is what the new world order is coming to. Good luck to all you patients. yes I called back and got someone with more than ONE brain cell and got the answer...

Why did the patient show up in the ER rather than calling your office?

My hospital is going to share my medical history with every hospital or clinic in the state of Iowa.
They gave me the opportunity to opt out, for now. I opted out. Iowa city will be the hub. Every entity that interacts with them will have access to any patient's records seen at my hospital. Every entity that interacts with an entity that has a patient's records can access the records. So...That would be most of the health care facilities in the state when you start connecting associations. |

I just had a procedure yesterday. Dr. was very explicit to call if I have any related problems. He was also very explicit that I call should I go to the hospital for anything unforeseen in the next 30 days. I kind want the docs/surgeons to know if I have any weak points at the moment. |

My wife is a home health PT. She tells me sometimes she sees people from the same family, sometimes moms, dads and children. When the family asks how their family members are progressing with therapy she has to deny seeing them, even if they are directly around the corner or across the street. She says they give her the look.

I understand the need to keep your social security number and other related items private But I have no idea why I cant state you were found at home with a dildo in your ass when you in fact were. The police can release all kinds of info. Just because it hurts your feels doesnt mean it has to be guarded like the plans to the stealth bomber. Whose in that room, why was this patient here , who got picked up drunk on the side of the road? Why the hell is that private other than feels?

Yep. They won't even tell you if your kid or spouse is in the ER or hospital.
In 1964 we used to print in the local weekly newspaper a list of patients in the local hospital. Yeah, we listed "white" and "colored" separately, and they were in separate wings of the hospital. Wikipedia: The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA; Pub.L. 104–191, 110 Stat. 1936, enacted August 21, 1996) was enacted by the United States Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton in 1996. It has been known as the Kennedy–Kassebaum Act or Kassebaum–Kennedy Act after two of its leading sponsors. Title I of HIPAA protects health insurance coverage for workers and their families when they change or lose their jobs. Title II of HIPAA, known as the Administrative Simplification (AS) provisions, requires the establishment of national standards for electronic health care transactions and national identifiers for providers, health insurance plans, and employers View Quote Anybody want to guess how long it will be before somebody hacks the national database---if they ever actually get it created? |

sorry to disappoint but I left nothing inside. THEY called me to tell me the patient was there but would not say why ?????? anyway, patient on her way to the office. Why she didn't call me first is my first question to her.

One of the most frustrating things about HIPAA is that pretty much any government agency seems to be exempt and can ask for (and providers are allowed to give) any sort of information it wants.

My Insurance that I pay for through work would not break down my wife's dentist bill and payments because she's isn't me.

I'm sitting in an America's Best joint to get my prescription for contacts. (My normal doc has dropped his hours back and is no a month + wait). Anyway, filling out the paperwork there was a highlighted box that talked about HIPAA, l left it blank. The receptionist handed the form back and said "I need you to initial that you received the HIPAA statement". I said "did I"?
Nope, and from what I gather, nobody else has recently since he couldn't find the form. He had to ask someone where it was. |

Someone didn't point out the special phone number to call if she felt funny.
Also an ER nurse needs to get chewed out. I hate stupid nurses. |

So much stupidity in that law and the idiots who work in Doc offices. I ordered a consult on a patient and called to have them fax the results to me rather then wait a month tog et it( god forbid my consultant would call me) I was told it would violated Hipaa to tell me the results. DOH!
