What's your go-to defensive load? I'm looking for a good defensive load for my Colt MKIII 2.5" snub.

158 grain gold dots.

In a barrel that short you are probably better off with the gold dot 135gr 38 spl +P.

38 special +p can't recall what grain bullet but I think around 150 grains.

In that barrel length I would consider using .38 spl +P, maybe even the Gold Dot short barrel .38's.

Timely subject!  I just picked up a S&W Model 19 Saturday.  I was looking for a Kahr PM9 or CM9 and saw this beauty in the case.  Can't wait to shoot it, I love old revolvers.  Thanks for the ammo suggestions!

I have a Rossi 357 Magnum R92 and Winchester 357 Magnum Model 94, and for those rifles I use American Eagle 158 grain jacketed soft point. I also have a Winchester 357 Magnum 1873, out of which I shoot only .38 Special; Winchester 130 grain full metal jacket.

Hornady Critical Defense 125gr for 357 - when I fill it with 357.  In a 2" bbl you get 1200 advertised fps.

BUT, I stopped carrying 357 in a snub because if you look at the ballistics, you are already deading them good enough with 38 Special +P with FAR less blast (potential for hearing damage in a closed room), and quicker time to second shot.

I use 125gr 38 Spec+P all the time now.  Comparing velocities, they list Critical Defense 125gr 38Spec+P at 1090 in 4" so it will be about 1000 in a 2".  Plenty of dead and you won't permanently lose your hearing.

The gold standard.

125grn JSP.

Probably would use something different for a short barrel, though. Mine has a 6" barrel, so I'm not going to lose any speed.

Mainly because I still have half of box left, and because I do not normally carry a .357 revolver, I would use Winchester Silvertips.

Though in a shorter barrel gun, the people using .38 +ps do have a good point.

I don't like the muzzle rise and flash of full house .357 Magnum in a short barrel.

I don't often carry my Ruger SP101, but when I do it's loaded with the 135gr 38 spl +P Gold Dots.

Anything in .357 through that gun, and after the first round I'd just as soon throw the gun at the target.  Granted, since it is a SP101, the gun might do as much damage as the bullet would.

In a snub, if you miss, they will likely be blinded and/or singed from the muzzle blast.

Gold Dot Short Barrel 357. Carry them in a SP101 with a 2 1/2" barrel, or a S&W model 65 with a 3" barrel.

The 357 load is driven a little faster than the 38 short barrel load, but not much. Some tests have seen the bullets on the 357 load come apart. Speculation is that since they are both 135 grains, that it might be the same bullet. But, a couple of sources say that isn't the case.

There are a lot of gel test videos on youtube these days. Since conditions vary it pays to watch as many of them as you can find before choosing your defensive load.

As far as what you recommend goes…

And in a shorter barrel

So I’m not saying you have the best answer, but the 125 grain Remington load is a very good answer.

My choice is the 125 grain Gold Dot on account of that’s what I have and it’s a real good load too. If and when I go to buy more ammo for my .357 I would happily get that Remington load. Of course there are probably a half dozen other loadings that are just as good.

This.  A .357 load can't use it's full potential in such a short barrel.
