Looking for a consensus. What do you guys think is a good wage. $40K a year? I've heard $60K a year was like the standard for threshold for upper middle class (if you're single).

I net about 26 grand a year, on VA disability. I'm single. Do just fine. Gotta be careful, save the nickels, but I'm better off now, than I EVER thought I would be...

I remember making about 12k a year and dreaming about landing that 30k a year job and I would be all set with no money problems.  Now between my wife and I we make over a 100k per year and you still have money worries.  As others have said it's all relative.  As your income goes up so does your mortgage payment, the price of your cars and the price of your toys.  My first mortgage was $575/month.  My current mortgage is $3200/month.

Like everyone else said it relative.  One of my best friends makes quite a bit more than I do.  He has a wife and three kids, I'm single.  At the end of the month when all the bills are paid and everyone's been fed I have quite a bit more left than he does.

... It's not "good" money, but I would expect a single man to earn 120K + to live as one "desires" in this economy.

Making more money then you spend, while enjoying your work is "good money"

Well as an E-5 SGT in the Army I "made" enough to be "comparable" to 40K a year on the outside. I just quit a 62K/year job because I was treated worse than a common fucking janator my first two days at that job. I still don't have a job but am better off. "Good money" is what you can put in the bank and be comfortable with. Some are fine with 20K a year...others aren't happy with millions.

I am happy being self-employed and not having to make someone else rich.

While I don't make tons of money I can say that I have very little stress employment-wise.

Used to work for an electrical engineering firm making close to upper 5 figures.Too mnay hours away from my family. I would not go back to that type of work for 100,000 a year.

YMMV

Nah.  Frankly, you could say that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Like it's already been said, it's all relative.  The more you make, the more you spend, the more you owe.

You end up getting trapped into a lifestyle and an income level.  That's why I was stuck in Maryland the last 11 years.

As close to a "good" answer as anything.  You will only understand this after chasing after "good" money.

You need a gross household income damn close to $200k to live in a decent neighborhood and raise a family in Northern VA.

Around here, good money used to be $15 per hour (about $31K).  That was before all of the mills closed.  Now, I got guys begging for jobs at $8 per hour.  It's all relative.z

IMHO, if you can save your annual salary every seven years, you are wealthy.
Link Posted: 5/10/2003 6:47:58 PM EDT
[#21]
I'd say that if you're making $100k you're doing well. Not rich by any means but you can probably pay your bills and have some money left over for toys.

Then again, like everybody else said, it's all relative. I got a 17% raise this year and about 50% last year and I still feel like I'm broke all of the time. The more you make the more bills you get.

Median household income is about $40K--half make more than that, half less.

http://www.census.gov/acs/www/Products/Profiles/Single/2000/C2SS/US.htm?Type=Tabular&Table=1&State=0 has income distribution for the US and for individual states. They even go down to county level.

I make "good money" but can't afford the $500K houses around here. So "good money" varies from place to place.

hell If I get a job at $14hr I will feel Like im doing good...
but thats because im used to neting 7k per year living at home and owning nothing but a P/U
Ive never known anything other than being broke so its relitive. Cant say Im not happy tho. I dont really spend money on anyhing Im a stay at home kinda person not real into going clubbing and crap like that or going to starbucks and throwing down cash for overpriced coffee. Or having a cell phone that costs me $100 month.
All stuff most of my friends do to each his own I guess... Call me cheap happy. And to me that is what matters. If ya want to live in a box car and your ok with that IMO your better off than the guy driving an H2 who is pissed off all the time because of the time he puts in at work.

That is no joke out here in CA.  I live in an average neighborhood and the homes here go for about $500k.  Luckily we bought right before the boom for less than half that.

I don't know how people afford these homes, even with cheap interest.  Hell, in my mom's neighborhood the average price is $700k and that is with 40yr old homes.  One of my good friends just paid $1.2m for what amounts to a large tract home.

Between me and the wife we do OK, but definetly can't buy on whims (though we try).  And affording out house at it's current value wouldn't be too much fun.  Four us to be totally comfortable, as in no money worries, we would have to make about $300k a year.  But when that happens you buy a bigger house and have the same worries.

Back in my late twenties I was making about 30k a year and living large cause I had cheap rent and no girlfriend.  Should have spent more of that money on guns. [:)]

Well, I almost fit that description and as others have said, it's all relative. I pay 1/3 to the feds, a full social security hit of almost $6,000 (think I'll see any of that?), and pay the correspondingly high property tax and insurance rates that a large metropolitan area demands.

I work for an employer with no pension plan and do not qualify for the IRA deduction (I can contribute but it's not a tax write off). As management, I can be fired anytime for any reason.

I have made less money and had more in my pocket at the end of the day. BTW, my UAW neighbor pops a six figure year with no more hours than I put in.

I am not complaining- my house is a nice little bungalow and my truck has 111,000 miles on it. I do have a fairly full gunsafe, however!

What is most important, to me, is liking what you do. I'd gladly take far less and be doing something with my time that I enjoy. Until then, I'll stay a whore...

We are all broke at different levels. I live in the SF Bay Area and out here $30K is practically poverty level. Besides, if you have 100k coming in an 101k going out, you are broke just like a guy making 10k with 11k going out.

My definition of "Good Money" is making enough to cover all expenses while being able to put some aside.
