Two Russian warplanes flew "simulated attack profiles" this week near an American guided missile destroyer in international waters off Russia, US officials say. The apparently unarmed Russian Su-24 jets came so close to the USS Donald Cook they created "a wake in the water", the unnamed officials said. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2016/04/13/reports-russian-war-planes-buzz-us-destroyer/82977844/ Russian attack planes buzzed the guided missile destroyer USS Donald Cook Tuesday during joint exercises with Poland and other NATO allies in the Baltic Sea, a defense official said Wednesday. Two Russian SU24 attack aircraft made several low altitude passes at the ship, including one in which a Russian plane assumed an “attack profile,” meaning it was heading at the speed and altitude it would assume if it was going to launch an attack, the official said. http://www.foxnews.com/world/2016/04/13/russian-jets-pass-us-navy-destroyer-at-unsafe-speed-in-baltic-sea-official-says.html Two Russian warplanes buzzed a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer in the Baltic Sea in what a defense official called a "simulated attack profile," one of several close encounters between the destroyer and the aircraft this week. The USS Donald Cook (DDG-75) was conducting flight operations with a Polish helicopter Monday when two Russian Su-24 attack aircraft approached at an “unsafe” speed and altitude and buzzed the Navy destroyer as the helicopter was taking off from the destroyer’s flight deck, the defense official told Fox News. The Russian jets came within 1,000 yards of the destroyer, flying just 100 feet off the ground, a defense official said. The next day, a Russian jet came within just 30 feet of the destroyer, the defense official said. |

Great. So now you guys know their exact capabilities and tactics. You radar profiled their every move and know if you can/ can't lock on.
Seems like it's all good for you guys. |

I hope they had balls enough to lock them up with fire control radar.

They're probing for intel. If they got lit up they'd probably shit their pants and never do it again, but have TONS of useful sigint. Our EW game is no joke - they want to know as much as they can. |

People need to chill out!
Russia does this from time to time! I watched a video a few years back, where some batty Russian General buzzed one of our carriers in a TU-95. The vid Showed where he was warned not to do it by both Russian air traffic control, and the carrier. The general was leaving the military, or something like that. And wanted some bragging rights. Really not a big deal! |

30 feet? the captian should have ordered the anti missle defenses be deployed.
read a good techno thriller years ago about a lone DDG operating off the Falklands keeping the fucking Argie trash from invading. ships getting buzzed by the argie AF, one of the ships helicopters was in deep ship getting rocked by the Mirage doing to the buzzing. the senior LT helicopter called out of the shps system to have his helicopter armed AIR TO AIR he was gonna take on the mirage. Captain orders him to stand down, on the next pass she orders the chaff dispensers fired. the mirage ingests a shit load of FOB and limps off. gee Putin we have no idea why your guys went down. Glad it happened while we were close by to fish the crew out of the drink http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/728207.Choosers_of_the_Slain |

we should have at least hit them with a targeting radar (which I bet we did) and maybe pointed some defensive systems at them. But I suspect we knew they were trying to provoke.... |
