well Mr. we seem to have a loose filling.
yes and a partially decayed underneath.

one root canal, a crown and three hours in the chair and i am all set to go.
total bill 982.62

750 for the root canal
250 for the crown
-100 new patient deduction
 17 misc expense.

i am ok with everything but the root canal.  750 sounds like a lot!  off to the drugstore to get meds.  amoxasilin (sp.)  and 800mg Motrin.  i will dump the pain meds and take Advil.

someone please explain how you jaw can be both numb and hurt like hell at the same time.

Lol I had two rootcanals done and one they didnt give me enough crap (whatever that shot is) Man was a sweating finally they sasked me if I was okay and took out that tarp over my mouth because every time they drilled I would shake. So I told them I can feel everything so they put something on the tooth and gave me another temp cap and set me home and came back in a week ready for more drilling.

Lol did I need to tell that? I love the dentist I really do because it some times feels good like pain but good at same time.

Well I own a Dental Supply Co. and Dad is a Dentist and I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express once. The $ sound like they are in-line except for the crown fee. It is $500-$600 low unless it is a temp crown and then you are looking at another $700-$900 for a permanent crown.  Do you have another appt. to follow-up? The reason your mouth is numb and still hurts is the tooth was probably infected and lidocaine does not work well when a tooth is infected. The antibiotic will do more for the pain than the motrin or Advil. It just takes timeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

I've got a root canal coming up.

I got into an accident on my bicycle this weekend and tore up a tooth pretty bad.  cracked two others, but that's it for them.  the damaged tooth came pretty close to exploding.  the root's intact, so they can do an extraction and a root canal rather than yanking the whole thing out and giving me a falsey

I'm with you.  I went over 50 years and had only one cavity.  Then, I went to the wrong doctor and he "found" six of them and decided my second molars (largest teeth in your mouth, ouch!) needed to come-out.  The price of a car later, I was much worse off than before I went.  The "permanent" crowns I had put in lasted less than six months.  I just wish Dentists didn't have a monopoly on professional cleanings.z

that's just about me exactly.
my old metal fillings are wearing out and the dentists are replacing them with crowns as needed.  be careful the old metal fillings can cause the tooth to crack after many years and if you don't stay on top of them you get nasty infections.  the new work looks nice once they are in.

I had a root canal done about two months ago and it was one of the BEST things that has ever happened to me; medical-wise. Turned out the offending tooth (molar) was causing a bunch of problems including painful sinuses and other bad stuff. The price you are showing for a canal seems about right, BTW.

If you are feeling pain during the procedure, TELL THE DOC!!! Don't try to be brave. When I was young, I would tough this stuff out. That was idiotic. Go for the meds!!! Use 'em!!!...that's what they're there for.

Gentle Reader, in the unlikely event that you're in SW Idaho, I highly recommend Dr. Stephen Rodell (Endodontist sp?) should you need a root canal.

God, got a monday appt with the oral surgeon. Got a back molar chipping and the dentist says it's not a viable tooth to save. But the roots curve and cross each other, so it's a trip to the oral surgeon. Will someone tell me this is not going to be a bitch! I already dread this.

i'm royally fucked if i ever decide to go

my jaw is out of alingment so that i cannot physically aling my teeth so that the bottom front teeth are behind the top front teeth like a normal person

they are exactly lined up and thats as far back as the bottom will go

it causes lots of dull pains in my jaw joints when i talk too much too

i'd rater put up with the constant mild pain then go to a butcher and have him cut me open to fix it

WhooHooo!  I just love this thread!

Know why?

Guess what I do for a living!!!

I wake up with one clear thought every day:  Everybody comes to the dentist, sooner or later!

On a note of seriousness (well, as close to it as I can get):  if your dentist can adequately anesthetize you, you need another dentist, period.  With the anesthetics and techniques available, indequate anesthesia should be the rare exception, not the rule.

Root Canal Therapy?  Again, with modern techniques, it should not take over an hour to treat the average molar, 20 to 30 minutes to treat a front tooth.  I know, I do it almost daily.

Nervous?  Normal condition.  Answer?  Sedation.  Find a dentist licensed to offer oral or IV sedation.  You get your care without anxiety or pain, a real winner.

Hey youse AR15'ers, stop your jain' and reread the bit above!

I can attest personally to what shooterX308 says. My Dentist is a Diplomate, American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and belongs to the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologist.

With general anesthesia and sedation techniques, the patients of this type of Dentist will have the perception of pain altered and will be virtually pain free during the treatment.

Yes, his services cost more. I'm paying to be nearly pain free. It's worth the price.

Don't like your current dental experiences? Change Dentisits!

That's pretty much the reason my eyes are closed from the time I hit the chair 'till they're done.  Really don't want to see those nasty implements of destruction.

Have had a lot of work ever since flipping a 3-wheeler on my mouth 22 years ago.

The screeching, grinding sounds.  The smells.

Due there 1:00 Monday for a 'Cleaning'.

Good God, I hate a trip to the dentist.

I used to be a big pussy about dentists.  Last sumer I had 3 fillings(amalgam) replaced with bonded ones, one new filling and a crown(no root canal.  The fillings didn't hurt one bit.  I have one minor cavity I am getting filled soon and I need my wisdom teeth removed.  They don't bother me and never have but Medical says they need to go because dental problems arising from intact and impacted wisdom teeth is the number one reason for being shipped home during AT and mobilization.

Anyway, I had the crown work done and it hurt mildly while they drilled and grinded the thing to a nub.  What was really bad was when they fitted the permanent crown.  Dentist asked if I wanted to be numbed.  I said how long will it take.  He said 10 minutes with 1 or two of discomfort.  Since I was on lunch break I opted for no pain control.  Well they took off the temp and started prepping the nub.   They cleaned it with a pick and the pain was a 2 on the 1-10 scale.  Then rinsed with cold water, 5 on the scale.  Then they applied some agent to "prep for the bonding agent, 5 also. Now came the air pressure drying, 8.  Then I started to salivate and licked the tooth.  Start over.  I did this 4 times finally they stuffed my mouth with gauze and blocked it open with a rubber wedge.  The pain during the water rinse and the air dry was pretty intense(jaw throbbing for 10 minutes) but I no longer fear the dentist as I think I have had the wosrt of it.  Besides I passed a kdiney stone once and it put me on the floor in a fetal position!  If I can endure that I can handle a dentist!

To Red Beard:

I did just what you say you are doing.  I gave up on the dentist until they started falling out, then went in to see what could be done.

He told me the only thing that could be done was total extraction of all my remaining teeth, followed by dentures.  It cost me my entire dental plan expenditure for the year, plus $4600 out of pocket on top of that.

The oral surgeon was great, I felt absolutely no pain at all during the proceedure.  I just layed down on the table, the nurse said "breathe deeply, please" and I woke up without any teeth plus a mouthful of cotton and sutures.

It took six weeks for the swelling in my gums to subside enough for the dentist to fit me with my dentures.

I am happy enough with my new "store bought" teeth.  They look real good.  But they are not the same as the real thing.

I strongly urge you to go to the dentist before it is too late.  You could not possibly hate those ******** as much as I did.  But natural teeth are better, trust me on this.

Yeah, I had one a couple months ago and it was about $1800 all told.  Nothing hurt except when the put the ring around the tooth under the gumline, that hurt like a biotch.  And the fact that he got my jaw muscle with the injection during the root canal and I could barely open my mouth for a month.  That really sucked.

...and that's the truth!  Problem is, I can sympathize with them to a degree - the old "if it don't hurt, it ain't broke" deal.  Unfortunately, the fact of the matter is tha pain is mother nature's way of grabbing you around the neck and telling you "look, moron, you've ignored this problem long enough now, and since common sense ain't gettin your attention, I have no choice but to hurt you."  And off you go to the dentist.  Most of the time, a painful condition denotes an advanced problem which will require expensive/extensive treatment, whereas 'preventive maintenance' may have spotted the condition in a smaller/cheaper/easier to fix stage of development.

Bottom line:  if your dentist hurts you regularly, get another one.  And I don't mean the needle hurting, I mean pain during treatment.  Failure to adequately anesthetize and failure to adequately manage anxiety are the chief causes of dental phobia; everybody here has the horror story they can't get over, and I don't blame them a bit.  The fact is that there are dentists available who are 1) skilled, and 2) trained in sedation.  Find one.  A final word of caution:  be sure to ask their credentials for anesthesia; the best are trained in a general practice residency or dental anesthesia program.  There are some doctors who can only offer oral sedation because they are only trained in what is basically a marketing program for offering the service, and I personally have reservations about this.  Trust your well being to only the best.

Now, let's check those roll-out packs for floss and a toothbrush, unless you want to use that wire bristled jobbie that you scrub the carbon off your bolt carrier with....[:D]

I had two fillings done without anesthesia...STUPID.  The effing needle hurts for two seconds, drilling and filling hurts for hours afterwards.

I went to a root canal and implant specialist.  Cost me a friggin fortune, but neither of my root canals hurt much at all. The worst pain was jaw ache from having my mouth stretched so far open.  You get to really appreciating those jaw wedges.

A permanent crown seems to start at around 900.00 around here.  A painless root canal?  1800.00.  I have about 3 grand invested in one of my teeth, but I'm glad to still have the thing.  Dentures suck and bridgework destroys two teeth to replace one...bad math.

Try the Oral B ultra floss.  It is like a lose weave and when you pull it tight it gets real thin.  I have the same problem and that is what I use.

I was the same way, hard as hell to get the floss between the teeth, until I saw a sign in my dentist's office:

"You don't have to floss all your teeth:
Only the one's you want to keep".

After that, I just did it, not mattter how hard it was.
It takes me 15 minutes to floss.

I also recommend getting a Sonicare tooth brush.
Before I got one, it would take an hour for the dentist to clean my teeth every 6 months.

After Sonicare, it take about 15 minutes ever 6 months.

Sonicare is the best investment you can get for your teeth.

I had a tooth break--an old filling went south-so I went to the Dentist.  He says, "I can't do anything with it.  You need go to Dr. Jablome for a root canal.  I'll make the appointment for you."

I go to the receptionist and they have Dr. Jablome's receptionist on the phone.  She tells me that it's cost $1000, up front in cash, since I don't have a dental plan.  I go back to the dentist's exam room and ask him, "What happens after the root canal?"

He says, "Oh, then I put on a cap."  I ask how much and he says, about $650 total.

I ask, "How much do you get for an extraction?"

"About fifty bucks, why?"  I tell him to fire up the Nitrous Oxide, polish his Lidocain needle because this sucker's coming out.

"Wait!" he says, "I can save that tooth!"

"Fine, you gonna pay the $1650 it's going to cost?"

"Well...If you get the tooth pulled, the other teeth are going to migrate."

"Where the hell are they going to go? Peru? Just pull it."

Best $50 I ever spent.

Beside, I have an unreasonable fear of the dentist that goes back to the 4 wisdom teeth I had pulled in under 5 minutes, at Naval boot camp.  I know it's unreasonable but, dammit, it's my fear and I'm sticking with it.
