Why do the prison guards on lookout use what appears to be a Ruger Mini-14.  Why not an AR-15
which is more accurate, reliable, hi-cap that work etc. Just wondering.  TIA

Why did the A-Team use Mini-14 too?

Perception.

Some military police are switching to it - it's not an "evil" looking gun like our beloved AR-15.

1. Prisons can have all the factory Ruger hi-cap mags they want.
2. Like Troy said, less money.
3. Durable, and reliable
4. Maybe more politically correct.
5. It’s just as easy to shot someone in the back at 200 yards with a mini-14
as it it is with an AR-15.

Just what I said.

Don’t know how to make it any clearer.

Don’t know what you thought I meant by that.

I assume that anyone trying to escape would be running away from the prison.
It was a poor attempt at humor, as I suppose an inmate could be doing any
number of things that would require the use of deadly force.  Attacking another
inmate, attacking an officer, running towards an officer with a weapon.

I did not want, nor intend to suggest officers would shoot someone in the back
with out cause.  Sorry if it appeared that way.

The only point I wanted to make is the Mini-14 is capable of preforming it’s
intended role in the prison system.

Every freakin prison movie I've seen has minis, they want to be like hollywood.
Except "Maniac Cop 2" excellent film! :) they have fukken AKs in the prison in NYC.

They are clunky, and ruff around the edges.
If I had to pick, it would be an ar-15 also.

In case you don't remember the A Team never shot anybody during their entire time on TV.

Maybe this is why there has been a rash of escapes in our prison system.

Yes, the A-Team was trying to eXonerate themselves.  They were framed for a crime they didn't commit.

They would have been pursued by even more LEO's had they gone out and killed people rather than just shoot up their cars.

Did they ever get away from that Col. Decker dude?
