Happened twice. Once I made myself wake up (scary dream when I was little), and one time when I basically came to the same realization: "hey, this is a dream. I wonder if I could..." and then I woke up. damn. Always thought that it would be cool to be able to manipulate dreams.

I have had them a few times.  My sister-in-law claims to have them pretty much every night.

There is a device available that you wear while you sleep which aids in lucid dreaming.  When it detects that you are in a REM state (eyes moving around), red lights flash in front of your eyes.  Supposedly, this gets your attention but doesn't wake you up.  It reminds you that you are dreaming so you can take control.  Eventually, you wont need the gear anymore to have lucid dreams.  At least that's what the people that make it say.

One of the techniques for maintaining lucidity in dreams is to look at the palm of your hand in the dream. This is supposed to be the easiest first step to controlling a dream because you are so familiar with your own hand...

I have them pretty often. Usually I just go with the dream unless something I really don't like is happening, then I either wake myself up or change the dream in a large way or a small way.

I remember one time I was walking around this street in a coastal town. There were these large 3 story houses lining both sides of the street. Then I realized it was a dream and decided to see what was behind the houses (kind of like a movie set). I walked around the back side of the street and just saw these facades backed by nothing other than a colored mist. It was cool.

I guess the easiest thing to compare it to would be the matrix and you're neo. Bad dreams where somebody is trying to attack you don't really do much when you can move the bad guys around with your mind. The key is realizing it's a dream and that what happens doesn't matter, then your actions are no longer are controlled by the dream.

The only bad part is not consistantly taking control. When you don't realize you can, it's like a movie. When you do realize it, you can do just about anything, although sometimes the parts of the dream you change can keep coming back (damn subconscious).

The freakiest part is having recursive lucid dreams. Imagine dreaming that you're in a casino and you win thousands and thousands of dollars. Then you realize that it is just a dream and you can't take it with you. But then you 'wake up' and have the money still with you. Everything is cool and you can't believe it happened. Then you wake up for real and realize you're not really instantly rich, or can't really fly like superman.

I have really lucid dreams mostly when I sleep in, or sleep longer than I usually do.  Sometimes I'll realize it, and wake up, then fall back asleep and be right back in the same dream...

Other times, I'm mostly lucid when I have a wet dream.  I wake up right after thinking 'crap.  Now I have to get up and change skivvies'...
