Church To Hide Cell Phone Tower In Cross
Money From Three Phone Companies Being Used To Restore Church

POSTED: 10:30 a.m. EDT May 1, 2003

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Construction was scheduled to begin Thursday morning on a new cell phone tower atop a Boca Raton church.

After months of controversy, the 99 foot 6 inch tower was set to go up, hidden within a cross on the Camino Real Community Church.

Some members of the community spoke out against the plan, calling it sacrilegious, but the Rev. David Seabrooke said he thinks it's a great idea, especially since three phone companies are paying the church for use.

"Every single dime has gone into the restoration of the church -- I mean, every dime," Seabrooke said. "And over the term of the lease, we're going to continue to use the funds to build the school and the church."

The next step, Seabrooke said, is to get permission to light the cross.

that's pretty common here in CT, where there're lots of quaint New England villages that don't want ugly cellphone towers. I've also seen cell towers disguised as pine trees.
