Holy Crap!

On the way to work this morning and come upon a bus that was already stopped. No kids in sight, so I figure the crumb snatcher is already on the bus and on his way to a seat.

No big deal. I'm in no hurry.

And we wait. And wait. I glanced at the clock after what I figure is about 30-45 seconds.

FOUR MINUTES LATER, two kids come sauntering out of the apartment building carrying backpacks as big as them. I mean sidling. Shuffling. Mall walking.

So, all said and done that was at least a 5 minute bus stop for two kids. Road is a state route, in city limits. Cars were backed up for a mile.

Like I said, I don't have a place to be but some folks do. I think that was ridiculous.

What's a reasonable time for a school bus stop?

I've seen some drivers close the door and deactivate the stop sign when waiting for longer periods. They then waive the traffic on to pass.

When the kids start to approach, the lights start flashing again.

That's too long.

Most of the time around here if the kids are not there the driver will just turn on regular hazard lights and not the red flashers for loading .

As long as the orange ones are only on you can go around the bus.

Sounds like that driver is a douche. If it happens repeatedly I would call the transportation depth at the school and complain .

I also love it when the parents who have to stand with their kids at the bus stop spend a few minutes chatting with the driver while the lights flash and cars pile up waiting.

That's too long.

If my daughter's bus driver doesn't see us waiting at the end of the driveway he doesn't even come to a complete stop. Will slow roll and make sure she isn't running down the driveway but keep on moving.

happens to me at least once a week on the way to work, usually at the same house... very frustrating.

"back in my day" my brother and I would wait out by the road rain or shine for the bus or it would just drive on by and my parents would chew us out to no end.

the world we live in.....

Its worth mentioning that I drive by (2) schools on my commute to and from work and the line of parents dropping their kids off is miles upon miles long. Mind you, this is a small 4A school, not some sort of huge inner city school. Apparently kids just don't ride the bus that much anymore. Ridiculous, b/c it causes SOOOOOO much more traffic on my commute..... unacceptable......

When I was a kid and rode the bus (late 80's early 90's) if you weren't in eyesight of the driver, they closed the doors and left...no time restriction. If you were in the eyesight of the driver and you weren't making an effort, they closed the door and started driving off. Generally that made the kids run so the driver would then stop (again) and open the doors to let them in.

when I was a kid and rode the bus, if you weren't visible they wouldn't even slow down. If you weren't on the bus in 30 seconds, you were getting a ride from mom. No joke.

I saw him leave a kid 15 miles from town cause he was petting his dog. Door opened, kid is in the yard petting the dog, driver honks, kid starts walking to the bus, dog follows, kid bends over to pet the dog some more, driver drops the clutch, off we go! kid started running and yelling but ol jim kept on trucking.

This is the same bus driver who bungied a huge boom box to the engine hump and would blast AC/DC the whole ride. Nothing like getting on a bus in 7th grade and hearing "Who's got big balls?! I've got big balls!" come rolling out of the door.

so, 4 minutes? No. F'ing Way.

We live less than a mile from school. Kids not allowed to walk, much less ride bikes. Bus picks kids up every day. No idea why.

Yep, when I was a kid, if you weren't at the bus stop when the bus came, forget it....

And this bullshit of the bus stopping at EVERY FUCKING house is crap too, in Buffalo, if I got stuck behind a bus in the neighborhood, forget it, they would literally stop in front of 5 houses on the same block, some right next to each other! Really, your kid can't walk next door?

Back in the day, for the whole block there was one stop....period, everyone on the block walked to it.

Sure, there are some kooky, weird ones.

For several years, we had a fucking HOT, 20 something driver. Gina (but we called her GG) had a propensity for wearing tight jeans and had a hellacious camel toe. She would regularly flirt with the boys and always stood up to see us off the bus, at school and would stand around outside the bus as we loaded on in the afternoon.

I fucking LOVED riding that bus.

They should be waiting outside unless it's raining or something. Then they should wait 1 minute for kids to get in the bus.
For kids with special needs (handicap) they should wait longer...maybe 2 minutes.

If you drive that way daily and want action. Call the school transportation dept have exact details address time and date ready if warranted they will speak to the driver. Some routes have weather related pick ups so the kids don't have to wait in the cold, saves the system from building shelters.
Other wise just lay on the horn after 2 minutes

If you wasn't at the stop it didn't even slow down unless they saw you, there was 3 of us at the bus stop

and if it was raining the other parents would take their kids to school.

Not me both parents worked 3rd shift so my sisters would get me up in the morning, the bus would slow down

just in time to watch me sprint through the rain to get to the bus.

Middle School was 3 miles away so if I missed the bus I would be running.

Back in the 90's, I used two watch two young brothers ride the bus to their house, which was 1/2 a block from the school door. They could have walked home four times while waiting for the bus to fill and depart. They were a strange family in all respects.

my bus gave you approx 15 seconds to exit your house max..( blow the horn 10-15 second wait then they were gone) ... then they left your ass behind.

wait 5 minutes? they would not wait 5 minutes if they saw you running for the bus across a field being chased by a grizzly bear.

iv also mentioned before that in high school, we had STUDENT bus drivers. they let the seniors drive the school bus as a part time job. my driver would not stop the bus for the jehovia witness kid. he had to run and jump thru the doors as the bus slowed to maybe 10mph..... same in the afternoon... leap from the moving bus...

I see this a lot and it amazes me. I rode the bus as a kid, and I knew the crazy bastard driving it would leave me standing there if he had to wait at all. No grace period for me to stroll out to the road.

Now they just shuffle out there like they haven't really made up their mid whether to go or not. Certain demographics are among the worst offenders, and the driver seems not to care. Then they haul ass between stops like it's a drag race.

ETA- Another thing is that the kids stand in groups fifty feet apart instead of gathering at a halfway point between two or three houses. The bus makes twice as many stops.

We were the only ones walking today, and the drop off area looked like the DC beltway.

I drive a main street to work through my town and they stop every 50 feet for a damn crotch fruit. What happened to a fucking bus stop?

My Dad drove a school bus for 25 plus years and if you weren't at the stop or your house out by the road when he pulled up he opened the door and looked hard and if nobody was there he drove off.

He was ALWAYS on time...your little Johnny better be too.

When I had to drive to my old job, there was a bus stop that was on the way. I think it was a special needs child. Yes, it was a short bus. This is on a township road.

I would try to time my commute based on when the bus was likely to be there. Basically, the bus would stop. Sometimes the mom would be there in the car. Sometimes she had to drive down and meet the bus. Regardless, the child would be escorted onto the bus by the mom, and they would be on there for almost 5 minutes with the blinkers on while (I imagine) she was getting the child situated, secured, etc.

I'm compassionate and all, but obviously there were special circumstances in this case. The people had a 150 yard driveway with a decent sized parking area. The proper thing to do, IMO, would for the bus to drive up their driveway and OFF THE ROAD, so they could park and take their time loading up the child without obstructing traffic. It would be safer for all involved.

If other kids were loading, as soon as they were seated the driver would go. Had to bike to school a couple of times because of this. I stopped missing the bus.

Depending on weather, be at the stop ready to get on or our driver didn't stop at all. Bad Weather he'd wait like 10 seconds for you to get out the door and wait till you got to the bus.

Then again I was on the bus like 30 mins before the last pick up and those 2 boys would come running outta the house putting on clothes and shit......then bitch about having to get up early to catch the bus. No one liked them. Last on/1st off and complained the whole time.
