Gear for towing? - AR15.COM

I just assumed (probably incorrectly) that while towing, you tow in "D". A friend recently said that it is better to tow in "3", even when on the highway. What is correct?

I have a Limited 4Runner...so, it's find for towing light loads like a UTV.

Depending on the load, you may want to come out of overdrive. You should have a button. Towing at 3rd on the highway would be interesting in any modern 5sp or higher vehicle

No OD button on Limited 4Runners.

You should leave the vehicle in D unless you find it hunting in and out of overdrive, and then you can shift to 3 until the driving situation changes, and then back into D.

Depends on what your towing.

I tow in Drive but with tow haul mode on. For rigs that dont have tow haul you can lock out the overdrive if you need a little extra power. Just start driving and get a feel for it.

I don't have a 3 option on my f150 so I just tow in D. If going through hilly terrain I will take the overdrive off.

When I get onto the freeway or rural highway where I can maintain 60 or even better, I just put in in 6th and leave it there.

Towing a UTV should have nearly zero effect.

and its easy to tell if its popping in and out of overdrive. D should be fine.

Also, for those with tow/haul mode. It isn't needed till you hit about 75% of towing capacity.
