Take a class to learn the fundamentals. You can learn ‘how’ to do stuff, but without the ‘why’ you’ll create a bunch of screwed up models.

You could probably get the class book & tutorial files. Just follow the lessons at your pace. I don’t know Civil 3D, but every major cad package offers classes. Find someone that uses that package for work, they’ll probably have class materials. |

I know Microstation has free tutorials on their Bentley Learn site. Pretty in depth stuff.
Maybe civil 3d has something like that. |

Solidworks has built in tutorials if you can get a student copy for free. (there are also other ways
 )

I second the recommendation of taking a class to learn the basics. Failing that, see if you can find someone that can give you some lessons.

I've been learning lt the last couple months. Company paid for an online program that is self paced learning.

make use of the tutorials found in the link above, and there are plenty of basic cad instructions on youtube.
the basics need to be learned... it's not hard a lot of tutorials follow whats written in books... so you could shop around for one and just go through it chapter by chapter learn the use of layers while you're at it. I got formal 2D/3D CAD training back in 2005, using AutoCAD 2004 
all the basics still carry forward to the latest version. for those lurking this thread, check out Draftsight. a free 2D CAD program. It handles a good majority of AutoCAD commands. |

How much do you know about site development? Surveying?
Civil 3d is very much a specialised design tool rather than regular CAD. I'd see if the local community college has classes... |

I'm around civil 3D users all the time, unfortunately my employer doesn't feel like this is something I should know anything about but it's something I would like to learn more about so I've taken it upon myself. I'd love to take a formal class, unfortunately that's just not possible with my schedule (I am currently taking online courses for my business administration degree) I do think I'll check the local libraries for some books. |

Not be a Negative Nellie, but leaning CAD from books is hard. I'm not saying don't do it, but finding someone to show you the basics will make it MUCH easier. Do you have any friends that use CAD and can take a couple of hours to teach you the basics? |
