A sea of blue stood in silence below a sunless sky in Midtown as thousands of NYPD officers gathered Wednesday to say goodbye to a friend — a husband, a father and a hero — who was taken too soon.
And as Detective Joseph Lemm’s flag-draped coffin was carried out of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, his 4-year-old son, Ryan, gave his dad a final salute.
Wearing a red tie, blue suit and NYPD pin, the boy watched from atop a cop’s shoulders as uniformed officers honored Lemm, who was killed Dec. 21 with five fellow soldiers by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan.
Lemm, 45, also left behind a wife, Christine, and a 17-year-old daughter, Brook, who read the hauntingly beautiful Chapter Three verses fromthe Book of Ecclesiastes, ending with the lines, “A time to love and a time to hate. A time for war and a time for peace.”
