I recently came across two like new Remington 870 Wingmasters. They are new or very low mileage guns and in beautiful condition. Serial numbers are 50 apart and made in 1978. On both of them the barred has rotational play where the barrels meet the receiver. The barrel nut on the mag tube is tight but if you "twist" the gun the barrel moves side to side or twists maybe 1/32" or a bit less. There is definitely some play in the barrel/receiver lock up on both guns. It is the same if the action is open or closed. Is this normal? Thanks!

Seems to me the lockup shouldn't allow any movement like that. But. It'll be an hour or so before I can check mine to be sure.

Abbenormal but fixable.

I bought my first shotgun in 1980. It was an 870 Wingmaster. K-Mart.  It had the exact same thing happening.  It drove me nuts. I ended up selling it.

Check for busted ejector. The forward end of it holds the barrel still. Could be a small piece of it missing.

This.

If the price is right, OP, it could be a bargain.

Remingtons from that time period were nice guns.

There will be a tiny amount of movement in the barrel.  It's only a problem if it's particularly sloppy.

These aren't screwed and pinned barrels.  They're held in with one hand tight nut.

They may have 3rd party magazine caps that are a little too shallow and don't tighten down enough.

Thanks guys! The gun is near mint and the seller wants $350 per gun. From what I could tell that is a great price. What do you guys think?

Talk him down for the one with the  loose barrel.  It should be fixed.

What would you think is a fair price based on the play needing to be fixed but the rest of the gun looks brand spanking new? Blue book was over $400.

You worry too much, a little movement should be expected.

I've been looking for a 70s wingmaster for a couple years, just can't find the right one. At $350, I'd probably take both.

Yup. I paid $400 for one last year in great condition. They wanted $460 at a big pawn shop but I was out the door at $400. Love em.

I missed a flawless '78 last year for $400. Didn't have the money that day, my gun fund is in my stock account through work and takes a week plus to get a check. Gun sold while the sale was pending.

I know where another '78 is, not quite as nice, for $329(cracked stock), as well as a current manufacture 3" wingmaster with chokes for $599. I'm torn on those, I want 3" and chokes, but 90% of my shotgun shooting is with 2 3/4" and modified choke-is steel OK in a fixed modified? I shoot a lot of ducks. If I have to buy a new barrel I'm at the price of the new made gun anyway.

MY Brother in Law just brought one over to strip down and clean. It came from an abused home.  Any how, in case you didn't know and were going to strip them down, DO NOT remove the Shell latch, one of his move and so I though you could take them off. Well, Turns out they're staked in and requires a tool to reinstall.

Guess who has a 870 Shell latch Staking tool coming in the mail.
