Yeah, $25 a year for climate controlled and secure storage for important docs. Cheaper and safer than a home safe.

While I do agree with your post, I also know of one incident of fire in a bank.  I don't know how much damage was done to the contents obviously.  Just some thing to think about.

Since this is arfcom, I say "get both".

To answer the OP's question.

Yes, safety deposit boxes are still very popular.

Maybe not in some circles, but overall, still doing quite well.

Though I admit it has been years since I have been inside a coupon room.

I do. It is free with my one of my accounts at my bank.

It has a copy of our will, power of attorney paper work and a list and pics of our house and household inventory.

Haven't looked in it for a couple years. Need to go check it out some day I guess.

I have one for free with an account. Problem is I can't find a bank within reasonable distance that has one available and the new banks don't even have them.

Yes.  Copies or orig. important papers.  Ownership papers to property, autos. etc.  Copies of college trans, birth cert., etc.  A little money.  A few things to make it possible to restart our lives if something bad happened to our house.

I thought I was going to have to get a "bullshit warrant" not long ago.

Had a box at AmSouth for years. Regions buys them out and moves the AmSouth boxes a mile down the road to their branch. Very convenient to us. I go in to access the box, girl looks at her screen and says I'm not authorized to open the box. Fortunately my wife, who had never used the box, WAS still authorized. When she signed the physical ledger I pointed out the half page of my signatures to the genius accompanying us.

We had one for quite a while when we were a little younger and less disciplined. Would keep a few to several thousand cash in it. Just made us take one more step before blowing it on impulse.

Considered it however I would have to purchase a firearm that I wouldn't mind not having easy access to at all hours of the day or night.

I'm sure it would go against the rules and regulations of my bank but  couldn't care less.
