This past weekend the artillery group that I reenact with hosted a Civil War artillery school of the piece at Bentonville Battlefield which also doubled as one of the park's summer artillery demonstrations. We fielded two guns, one Federal and one Confederate, our group's bronze 1841 6 pounder smooth bore and the park's 3" Ordinance rifle. We had a great visitor turnout and got to train several guys on the correct artillery drill. Enjoy the pictures and ask any questions you have.

I'll be heading to Gettysburg in a couple weeks.

The arty boys always had the most fun in camp. Old enough to have cool toys and not care what the rest thought.

We actually have mostly younger guys and do campaigner events. The guy that owns our gun got it from his parents and was real army artillery in Iraq. Doing artillery with us is not always an easy job. We use these quite a bit.

There is a bracket on the breach of the gun, as you can see in this picture.




A pendulum hausse sets in that bracket and automatically levels. It has a sliding sight and degree marks. The limber chest lid has a table of fire with the range and degrees of elevation matched up. The service charge stays the same. Below is a pendulum hausse.




There is an elevation screw under the breach that you turn to adjust elevation.

The table of fire also gives time of flight to set fuzzes for shell and case shot.
