You can never make anything unsaleable or unmarketable. You used elephant ivory and rhino horn as an example - those animals products are still being sold and shipped worldwide. There is a huge black market for both items, mostly in the orient. There are regular news articles of illegal shipments being intercepted but the interception do not equal the poached ivory and horn so a lot still gets shipped and sold.
People that buy the ivory and the middle eastern artifacts aren't showing these items at public galleries, they are for person viewing or to show among rich, like-minded friends. As prohibition and the war on drugs has taught us, outlawing items does not work. |

When they converted Byzantine churches into mosques, they usually plastered over the mosaics instead of destroying them. We see this at the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. When it was made into a museum under the secular Ataturk, the plaster was removed to show the sacred mosaics and wall paintings in all their glory. Now, the Islamist president of Turkey, Erdogan, wants to make it a mosque again. What are they going to do with the artwork? |

I get annoyed by people that try to argue that Islamic jihadists aren't actually motivated by Islamic fervor, but instead are motivated by something else - like money, power, grievances, Western imperialism, Gitmo, et cetera. These guys are true believers. They're insanely fanatical about their religion. That's honestly all the motivation that they need. I know this might be hard for someone to believe who's either not very religious themselves or who wants to think of Islam in a more positive light, but this type of ignorance and Islamic apologetics is dangerous because it misleads people into not properly understanding the ideology of our enemy. Are they selling some of these ancient artifacts on the black market? Probably. But to say that that's their real motivation for literally declaring jihad against these artifacts is retarded.
Robert Fisk is a traitor in my opinion. He's been apologizing for our Islamic enemies and blaming the West for their actions for decades. Even Osama bin Laden endorsed his writings. By writing this article, he's trying to downplay the Islamicness of their crimes against humanity, and instead is trying to blame their actions on pure greed - including the greed of Westerners who are supposedly fueling this demand for the artifacts that are supposedly being smuggled by the Islamic State.
