And meditation is the answer. Seems extrapolated from polling....POLL ADDED. Pain is never far from the sufferer’s mind. There’s a reason 71 percent of men and women reported “feeling nervous, anxious or on edge” in the past two weeks, and 73 percent said they had “little interest or pleasure in doing things,” says Savage. “Pain actually changes the central nervous system,” she explains. Fortunately, there is hope: “We’ve found that therapies like meditation can really change pain transmission and processing.” |

More retirees every day, I know older people in continual pain, and also people with damaged backs.
But that number still seems a little too high. |

After all "pain" can be very difficult to diagnose, and easy to fake. After about two years of seeing spine specialists here in DC for my chronic back pain, and trying lots of different drugs, procedures, injections into my spine, physical therapy, etc. - I asked my main doc there EXACTLY what was causing the pain. His answer: "I have no idea" - and listed a bunch of things it could be, or probably was, but he wasn't sure, and it could be a combination of things. |

I have severe arthritis in both shoulders with the right one being the worst. I cannot get more than an hour of sleep at a time because every time I move to roll over I wake up from the pain. I have had to resort to working a job at half of what I made before because I simply can't do steel fabrication work anymore. The pain meds don't help and only serve to upset my stomach. I refuse to take narcotics so I'm stuck with nsaids which don't really help. My only recourse is a full shoulder joint replacement but the doc won't do it until I'm 55 and that's 6 years away. I'm wishing that there's something that I can do for the pain but unfortunately I'm stuck with it.

Lower back pain since I was 18, now 28. Chiropractors and physical therapy doesn't help so I just live with it.

Is this like the poll that found widespread hunger by asking "Have you ever been hungry during the day?"
Yes, my knees hurt every single morning when I get up. I don't classify that as "chronic pain." |
|
Five bad disc, missing half of left elbow (shattered and removed) chronic intestinal problems, fucked right shoulder I've never even seen a Doc about. Yes my life sucks many days but pain lets me know I'm still alive.

Shitty diets. Pain has many causes. My osteonecrosis has nothing to do with diet or exercise or any other lifestyle choices. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile I'm not discounting genetic disorders and injuries as legitimate causes, but with 2/3 of the US adult population overweight or obese, and estimates that as much as 50% of the total US population suffering from metabolic syndrome as a result of their dietary choices, a huge chunk of chronic pain sufferers are suffering because of their diet -- either pain directly due to excess weight, or the side effects of metabolic syndrome that was caused by diet. |

I have chronic muscle pain, neck, back, legs... Getting up every morning sucks. I push myself through the day but never really feel energized. I exercise regularly, lift weights, bike, run, etc. But while I make gains in strength or speed and look "fit", exercise exacerbates the muscle pain. Every test from every doctor comes back normal. I also have issues sleeping and I think the pain stems from lack of quality sleep, but again no doctor can help me sleep better either. I can see how someone could get hooked on pain killers, if it makes this all go away.

Has the incidence of chronic pain in America changed, or the willingness to whine about it changed?
Perhaps chronic pain is final stage/result of a nanny culture.

Gout and pseudogout and oddly enough, a stroke affecting my left side has lead to left shoulder pain

If you have not tried it, Radioablation therapy works really well for my back injury and it keeps me off pain meds. RFA is a procedure used to reduce pain. An electrical current produced by a radio wave is used to heat up a small area of nerve tissue, thereby decreasing pain signals from that specific area. I just copied the description from webb md. |

I signed up to see a new General practitioner last week, and the first thing they said to me is "I see, Mr. Nesvick, that when you last went to the ER (A few months ago) that you were prescribed Narcotics (Norco for kidney stones).. I am in chronic pain, as in several disc jacked up all along my spine, soft tissue tears that never healed right, degenerative disc disease, spina bifida, etc. but I only take pain meds when I get kidney stones. As of right now I have a "pinched nerve" in my upper shoulder area. People need to Toughen Up likt aimless says.
What's funny is the last time I went to the ER for my kidney stones, the ER take in nurse asked what was wrong. So I told her, kidney stones, she asks in a condescending tone, "how do you know that sir"? I told her to look at my cat scan from the night before |

An aging population will increase the numbers in chronic pain with a variety of causes. 1 in 31/2 does seem a bit inflated though.
