Most states had 13 or 14 as the minimum age to marry until a few decades back. I have an ex whose mom was legally married at 13 in the 60'S

Yes, this has been in the code since - well since girls tended to marry around the age of 14. Likewise, just because the normal age of marriage has shifted up in the US, I highly suspect it has not in every other country in the world - but we expect them to change their rules to suite us.
I think the old stand by rule was if she was old enough to be pregnant, she was old enough to be married. 14 was probably just about when most girls hit that mark (again, age of puberty has shifted a bit younger since then in America). --- If you look at society 100 years ago. Most 14 year old kids had already helped raise several of their siblings. Had already helped with their mothers deliveries, and already known women who died during childbirth. They were a LOT more mature than most 30 year old women today. |

Dad married Mom when she was 15 and they have been married 54 yrs
My sister got married at 16 and has been married 34 yrs My other Sister got married at 18 and has been married for 28 yrs Thing is these days most 18yr old kids have the brains and skills of a 14yr old. Many have never held a job or had any responsibility, thus is why a 14 yr old Is a child. You would be a perv to want to marry or have sex with one Unless you are under 16. |

Also, consider this. Have a couple of kids in your teens; by your mid thirties they are out of the house and you can enjoy life. Better than hassling with them into your fifties. |

My Stepmother's mother got married at 15. Her husband was 25. She was with her husband for 70 years and had 6 kids. When she passed away her husband nearly lost the will to live.
