Any ideas? Would like to be around $300 per.

Walther PPX for $290.
Canik TP9 for $300. Sig Sauer Sp2022 for $350. Original XD's for $360. Police trade M&P's or Glocks for mid $300's. |

J&G Sales has a S&W model 10 for $299. 4" heavy bbl, very sturdy, very reliable.

I never feel like it isn't enough gun with a couple speed loaders nearby. ETA: My answer was going to be a Ruger SR9. |

I'm guessing they are for HD so why would you want cheap vs reliable?

theres a gun counter guy at my cabelas that loves to tell me about all of the hi-points he has hidden on his property

Just save a little more and buy a nice TRP or VP9 buy once cry once imo. A cheap gun turns into a expensive gun when you don't like it then you buy a nice gun you should half bought in the first place

You can get a maverick 88 for less than 200 bucks at academy. Also what ever pistol you end up getting, make sure you can be proficient with it, my buddy bought a Taurus pistol recently on sale for like 230 bucks, think it's a gen 2 pt111 and literally can't hit crap with it. I don't consider myself a great shot but I've got a lot of practice and with certain guns can blow the 10 circle out of a target. And literally was shooting 7 inches low with his Taurus, couldn't get used to the trigger breaking so late and probably one of the reasons I comes with an adjustable sight.
Personally I don't scatter guns around the house, I have a rotation of guns im proficient with, they those are the ones I choose from to be on my hip. When not there, everything is locked up in the safes |

Glock or Sig Police trade-in.
And yes, I've found Sigs for just a tad over $300, that were trade-ins in great shape. Block trade-ins are easier to find in that range. |

A Ruger P95 is dependable and if worst comes to worst, you can beat them with it.
A CZ82 is great but might be harder to find. |
|
The Taurus PT111 G2 is my best selling gun at $299.99 and it is available in 9mm or 40 S&W for the same price.

If only Ruger still made the P295. Those were great guns for the price (~$350.)
With that out of the question, I would look at the Walther PPX. Great if you don't intend on carrying it. Ergonomic grip, good trigger, and high capacity. |

View Quote While a good option for carry, I think there are better options for an "around the house" gun. |

I love my Walther pistols, but Glock, because Glock. Cheep, simple, reliable, and mags interchange.

In the house, no concerns about concealability? Short but legal shotgun. Maybe a Hi-Point carbine. Why handicap yourself with a handgun when you don't need to?

I seem to see plenty of complaints on this site about failures from just about all ranges of guns. I doubt his question is about cheap vs reliable, but more about cheap and reliable. |

I don't always buy home defense guns, but when I do, I like to spend as little as possible.

Police trade in glocks should be 400 or so out the door. Sometimes less, kind of depends on what exactly you are after.
I would also consider the s&w revolver mentioned. Something like this should be easy to find used holster for, used mags or speed loaders, and whatever else you might later want for it. |

I have known personally about a one shot kill with standard hardball ammunition on a military training exercise gone bad with this one. Witnessed a constabulary policeman in the Philippines shoot a guy square in the back on the run with one round that was lethal with this one also. This model and caliber will get the job done in an emergency and are highly reliable too. Price is highly reasonable in my opinion. |
