It was a little more involved than I thought.

I thought it was entirely Johnny Carson's fault, but it actually started in Congress!

Hard to believe toilet paper wasn't even invented until WWII.

Yes, indeed it is.

The use of paper for hygiene purposes has been recorded in China in the 6th century AD, with specifically manufactured toilet paper being mass-produced in the 14th century.[1] Modern commercial toilet paper originated in the 19th century, with a patent for roll-based dispensers being made in 1883.

I remember using some stuff in Yugoslavia in the 80's that was flat folded sheets like tissue but the texture and wiping effect was closer to construction paper.  You could see the chunks.

Apparently, they had a hard time keeping splinters out of the earlier versions of manufactured toilet paper.  Maybe it wasn't until WWII that the processing methods improved to the point that you could wipe carefree without worrying about splinters.

My mom and her siblings used the Sears catalog when they were kids.

It's fascinating how things like this happen.

Still too young back then to worry about toilet paper.

Then again, we still used the Sears catalog and the slick pages always went last (neighbor's dad on a farm)

I was born in 73 and I always wondered why my grandmother had every closet stacked to the ceiling with TP as I was growing up.

Never made the connection until now.

A co-worked who visited the Soviet Union said it was referred to as a "clever combination of waxed paper and steel wool".

I remember the lines around the stores, the rationing, the big government  "Just hold it In" campaign.

The Moratorium on 2 ply.

The Ban on Bran.

Go try and find a Sears catalog from '73. Try, I dare you.

None survived.
