Need a straw or wide brim hat for roof top service.

Since I wear shorts and basic carhartt shirt, am I disqualified to wear a typical cowboy hat?

My ball caps are too hot and no ear / neck shade.

Stetson and Resistol use multiple type pelts to make theirs.  They are indeed cowboy hats. (beaver, mink, chinchilla and other animal fur as reported on their website in faq's)
Bud, your 100% beaver is probably not 100% beaver unless you had it custom made.  Tell Sissy hello.

I've got straw and beaver western hats, but when I really want sun protection, the boonie is it.

Most over rated shit on the planet.

I bought a highly vaunted Seattle Sombrero and was extremely disappointed in the fact that the brim has no structure and will fold up/down in the slightest breeze.

Pith helmet is not as groovy, but functionally superior in every way.

People with fashion rules that require only certain clothing with the wearing of a cowboy hat most likely have NO cowshit or mud on their boots.

They are all hat, no cattle.  And I'm sure they iron a crease in their Wranglers and wear their hat indoors.

Ignore the haters.   Straw cowboy hat does a great job of keeping the sun at bay.  Find a cheap one with a vented crown.  Add in one of these to the front to keep sweat out of your eyes.  -J

Tan colored boonie. Soaks sweat too.

Unless you are riding a horse and/or herding cattle a cowboy hat looks retarded on 87% of men.

Go to the beach.

Find a fat middle aged busty redhead that is slathering on SPF 30,596 sunscreen. Look at what is on her head and buy that.

It's what I do and I work on steel decks.

What's with the Rhinestone Cowboy mindset? You're working, not trolling for poontang.

Go to Tractor Supply, Southern States, of your local farm Co-Op. They have a good selection of straw hats for about $10.

I know they have a lifetime guarantee about workmanship/defects, but loss??  I've never heard of that before.  Please elaborate.

ETA:  Nevermind, finally found it on their website.  They provide "insurance" for 2 years, and will replace it with a 50% deductible of the current catalog price.

Numerous scientific studies show that everyone has a secret desire to wear a pith helmet. However, many feel inhibited by emotionally destructive societal norms and pressures. I am a community activist who advocates for a safe, healthy and supportive environment for the expression of everyone's inner explorer. If we work together, we can continue to spread the message of pith helmets. Thank you for "coming out".

Whatever floats your boat.  I just got a hat at walmart thats sort of like an outback or boonie with a wide brim.   The key is that it has mesh on the side to keep your head cool.  The ones with the rivet vents are too hot.

A straw cowboy hat is great if you are in the open, standing, walking, sitting on a horse or open tractor.  Not so great if you are working around stuff or there is much wind.  If you really want a brim for roofing, look at a Boonie, Aussie style, fedora, or Tilly.  A fishing cap w/ a cloth sunshade (WW2 Japanese style) may be handier.

Palm Gus. I think Resistol has a nice one but there are tons of companies selling them. You can get em with like a 6" brim too, bound edge or unbound.

Probably wants a wider brim.  I was in the same situation and bought a cloth Aussie style outback hat I found in the fishing department of an outdoors store.  Same sort of waterproof nylon fabric as a boonie hat but the brim is about 3 times as wide.
