A couple of weeks ago, I witnessed an older woman slip and fall in a grocery aisle.

It took about 30 seconds before my BS detector started going off.

I had offered her my hand to help herself up and she declined the offer.  She seemed to be more interested in seeing if other people saw her fall.

After sitting on the floor, she got herself up and went straight to the Customer Service desk in the store.  Obviously, I don't know what she said, but store personnel came by and mopped up a liquid on the floor.

I waited until she left and then went to the people mopping up the floor and told them "I can give you my name and number for when she eventually sues you over this."  They asked why I thought she was going to sue them.  I told them that her acting was sub-par and her actions were more in line with someone who was collecting witnesses instead of determining an injury.

I was right.

The call came in this afternoon from higher headquarters of the grocery chain.  They wanted to know what I had seen and what I thought happened.

Apparently, she has gotten herself an attorney and needs a bucket of money to make herself feel better.

This is pretty common.  Happened a few times when I worked LP for Lowe's.  The retards usually STFU and went home real fast when we told them that I just pulled the video, and they are welcome to come and watch it.  A few people legit tripped over something that shouldn't have been there, but the majority tripped/slipped on absolutely nothing and I assume were just looking for a pay day.

I hate thieves and she is just another flavor of them.

I told them what I saw and that I believed that she was trying to pull a scam.

They took down what I said and asked if someone else could contact me later on this.

I told them that was fine with me.  I suspect they'll tell her attorney that we have a witness who has thrown the yellow flag on the play and then offer them a small amount to go away.

I doubt I will ever hear of it.

At most, I suspect they may take a deposition from me and then show it to her attorney and say "do you want to go to court with this or do you want to settle for $X,XXX.XX to just go away?

Now you get to sit in court for a few weeks, for free. The attorneys will be making $1,200.00 per hour, good luck.

lol...no, that's not how these things work.

They don't want to go to court.  They just want a settlement check to be awarded in order to make them go away.

The size of their check depends on the quality of their case.

Hopefully, I just substantially reduced the size of her check.

Personally I'd call her bluff if I thought I had a chance, but I guess a lot of people would take the cheaper option over principle.

Oh Op, how delusional you are.

I too got involved as a witness once, I learned my lesson.

As said, you will sit in court and when the case is called and the defense sees you, they will ask for a continuance.  Over and over until you don't show.

The bad part is the DA and judge know the game and play along.

But, let's say that you're right.  I'd be more than happy to show up and explain to them the low-grade theatrics that I observed.

There was liquid on the floor. She fell.
She took a while to get up, apparently looking around to see if anyone had seen it happen.
Looking around is common enough when someone falls; They are embarrassed and likely don't want people to have seen it happen.
I'm rather sensitive myself about being seen as clumsy and vulnerable.

Maybe the store should make sure they don't let liquid accumulate on the floors.
Maybe she should expect there to be hazards everywhere she goes.

Hmmm. Walking around...play stupid games, get stupid prizes?

And...just how did the liquid get on the floor?

Sure they do. Some sue because they were embarrassed. They feel like they deserve to get satisfaction from the people who embarrassed them. People are not all alike.

There was nothing leaking from the shelves.  There weren't any broken or punctured items on the shelf.

I don't see that there was anything that the store did that negligently placed this liquid on the floor.

Someone spilled it or put it there for another purpose.

My mom slipped in a Target store, had to have an ambulance take her to the ER for a broken arm. Target never called to offer their apologies, and when we asked to review the security footage we got the old "it's against corporate policy", and never heard from them again. The slip occurred 10 feet from their snack bar, and her and my daughter stated the floor was oily in that spot. We all knew target fucked up somehow, but what are you gonna do? It was dry outside, and my mom was wearing walking shoes.

Sued many times .

Just ain't worth going to court .  It becomes a money thing .  Lawyers are expensive .

Mom slipped on a snail at a bigbox store's garden department.  The ball on top of her femur tried hard to snap off.  I think it only broke half way off.  The clerk walked over and said, "just get up."  Asshole.  He then concedes that the snails WERE a problem.  Ambulance scraped her up, and some doc put in a few hollow 3" titanium bone screws.

After some months(?) she had some or all the screws taken out.  They sit in the China cabinet in her den.  They are beautifully made, and on closer inspection, you can see on them where the doc cammed the hex wrench out a few times, installing them.  I don't believe we sued, I think they settled.  She would much rather have had an intact hip, than ANY sack of cash.

When I managed an Autozone, we had more than one occasion of people grabbing something off the isle, walking around, and the squirting it on the floor and slipping on it.  One really clever group of people came in and separated at the door, and one went and picked up a liquid item from the shelf, and walked down an isle and squirted it, and then one of the other guys slipped in it. Then the others and the first one claimed to have witnessed the accident.

Cameras caught them though. lol

She better continue her acting beyond the store.  With your tip-off, corporate will probably hire an investigator to record her at home and around the community.  If she does anything that shows that she is not injured, that video will make its way into the settlement meeting and she will leave with NOTHING.

A former girlfriend worked in a law office that did this all of the time.  It was crazy some of the stories she came home to tell.
