Put some shades up on the OUTSIDE of windows that get sun.  Once the sunlight gets through the windows it is in to stay.

This, you need to block the sunlight before it hits the window pane.

Put some plastic bottles half filled with water into the freezer, just lay the bottles onto their sides so the expanding water doesn't burst them.  You can put a frozen water bottle in front of a fan to create a cool breeze, just keep rotating them so you always have one or two handy.

We had a high of 70 today.

It sort of evens out with the harsh couple of winters that we've had as of late.

Is A/C one of those things that just not as common in other countries as it is here?
View Quote
A/C is indeed not that common here. Simply because we have a seaclimate where temperatures don't get that high that often.

Aircos in cars are common offcourse, but only for the last 15 years or so.

Allmost all of our houses are made out of bricks. Once the heat gets in there, it is much harder to get it out I guess.

I bought a mobile airco for my office a few years ago. A large hose is connected to a hole in the wall and it runs very nice.

It is loud sometimes, but it gives a lot of cool air.

Attic fan for the night might help.
Window AC and/or some fans, ceiling fans.

Central AC and ceiling fans. If you don't have those, keep the windows and blinds closed during the day and at night open the windows to let out  the warm air.

In the south it's still 83 degrees with 73 dew point at night.

Opening the windows at night is a very bad idea. Then all the humidity gets in and you're miserable. Use the AC to remove humidity.
