Police: Forced to kill ex-con

When police tracked down a suspected Tempe bank robber, the man apparently decided he'd rather commit "suicide by cop" than return to federal prison.
And that's what happened, according to a Chandler police report released Friday on the April 4 shooting at Williams Field Road.
The report said Jerry McDonald taunted police to kill him, then left them with no other choice when he charged them with a chrome knife that officers mistook as a handgun. He had warned police he had a gun and would use it.
"I'm going to come out and force you to kill me," McDonald, 44, told Mesa police Sgt. Warren Solomon, a negotiator, as McDonald sat in his car surrounded by police at gunpoint, the report said.
Chandler police Officer Scott Yarbrough, fearing McDonald would kill an officer, fired one fatal shot with an AR-15 rifle. Tempe Officer Chris Sinclair fired simultaneously, hitting McDonald twice with non-lethal rubber bullets.
The man's death ended a tense standoff that started when police chased him from a Tempe bank where he had stolen more than $3,000.
McDonald had been released from a halfway house in March, just a few weeks before the shooting, the report said.
