It's the military.  They make us paint rocks and buff concrete.  Adding extra, pointless steps is pretty much a block to be checked when creating any task.

There were South Vietnamese army guys fleeing, trying to find anyplace to land. They landed on US ships, and were heavily armed. They were disarmed, and many
weapons tossed overboard.

Ships ran out of room and they started pushing choppers overboard.

Also, the US Embassy had one millions dollars cash, they were ordered to DESTROY it.

I wonder how many of them wound up in a seabag.

"Oh yeah, we totally threw those rifles over the side."

Lol.

I talked to a guy after class one day. He said his grandpa got a hold of a bunch of Nazi paraphernalia. Supposedly a Luger and a nazi youth knife was involved. When the war was over and they were about to land at a port on main land America, the commanding officer came by. He said that every man on the ship would be searched. If they threw their war trophys over board and into the ocean, there would be no punishment. If you tried to hide it, they would tan your ass as far as the law would allow. There was a mad rush towards the side rails of the ship. All sorts of shit disappeared forever. When the soldiers left the ship, they were never searched. Old boy's grandpa was pissed.

Many honest men were kept honest on that day.

It wasn't US property. It was a bring along from the South Vietnamese leaving and had landed on a US ship during the fall of Saigon. Most of the Hueys you have seen them pushing over the side weren't US Hueys either. They too beloned to the South Vietnamese militarty right up until they ceased to exist the next day.

Do you think he was given Task, Conditions, and Standards before proceeding to said task?

A good friend of mine got out of Vietnam on a carrier towards the end. His father was Vietnamese Air Force working with US Air Force as some sort of Liason. They grabbed his family and put them on some sort of smaller boat to shuttle them out to a carrier. He said they were getting shot at when the first boat pulled away from shore. He was terrified. We were second grade when he got to the US, didn't speak a lick of English. A local church sponsored about two dozen families.

A coworker lost his family getting out of VN a few years later. His uncle owned a big fishing boat so the family loaded up and fled to Indonesia. Indonesia turned them away but the crew hit a reef and the boat sank. His mother, brothers and sister, and a couple of uncles drowned.  His father grabbed him and started swimming to shore before a couple of local fisherman picked up the survivors. Indonesia stuck them all on a small island with a bunch of other refugees for two years trying to find a place for them. He and his father were finally sent to Canada and made their way to California. That was about 30 years ago. His father just passed away. He has no family left. It's amazing what people go through for a better life.

Looks like an M16A1 followed by an M1 (or M2) Carbine.
