The surprise attack, and the authorities' apparent failure to detect the insurgents massing in the area beforehand, has raised fresh concerns about the Afghan government's ability to secure the country following the formal conclusion of the U.S.-led combat mission at the end of last year.

More than seven months after President Ashraf Ghani took office, Afghanistan does not have a defense minister, even as the security situation has rapidly deteriorated nationwide.

On one hand.  But on the other, we did need the practice

Was pretty much inevitable. Within the government and government forces those occupying the lower ranks are stoned out of their minds and fucking goats 6 days of the week, while those in the upper ranks are stealing everything not bolted down and giving it to their families.

Neither group care about actually protecting or governing their country. I doubt they really even understand the idea of nationhood. Just grab as grab can. Insha'Allah.

This

If you look at the history of the entire region, it quickly becomes clear why there is so much violence.

The countries where "formed" by outside colonial powers, or politics.  The people living there had very little, to no influence, on how the lines were drawn on the map.  These people don't think "nationally".  If they care about anything it's their local community, or tribe.

2. Surreptitiously arm each ethnic group.

Your recall of that iconic image was identical to a Viet Nam vet I once worked with.
Flew UH1s, shot down twice and saw the worst of it.  When the U.S. invaded Afghanistan
and it was headline news, I remember what he said to me paraphrased for here,
He said, "Well, took them 40 years but it looks like those stupid f*cks in DC did it again.
They will mire this country in another 10 year war chasing an enemy that doesn't wear
shoes.  In the end, we will finally leave by helicopter from the embassy roof."

He passed away 6 years ago.

I have a friend who did two tours in Vietnam as a medic. He only has a few weeks to live as he contracted cancer from what he thinks was exposure to a lot of agent orange. The VA finally agreed with that. Has had to wear gloves at night to keep from scratching until he bleeds. His toe nails fall out every once in awhile etc.  Already having fluid drained from heart sac and lungs to keep going.

He said similar things about Iraq and Afstan long ago.  It's pretty obvious after about five years of a police action where things will end up.  Same play just a different cast.......

Imagine if Obama removed US troops as he wanted

Going into a war without a clear understanding of what it takes to win is stupid.  The current situation is what comes from setting a date to declare victory versus declaring victory after the surrender of your enemies.  If the enemy will not surrender, extermination is the only recourse. Knowing this should shape policy... But it doesn't.
