I'm not in favor of warning shots when the attackers' intentions are so clear.

I don't recall any uproar over that video either. Was that the news creating news instead of reporting it?

The only "uproar" is that they're wasting ammo with warning shots, IMO

Yep.  Pirates don't deserve warning shots.  Hostis humani generis.

I wonder if any Japanese whaling captains are paying attention?

Screw warning shots.  I would rather hide until they were well within range and then eliminate all the pirates on that ship.  Enough go missing and it may just slow down the piracy some.

I agree this falls under "Play stupid games, win stupid prizes". The fewer pirates that collect money, the fewer that will want to try it.

I can see 5.56 mm firearms for short range, but for stand off they should be armed like the Rooskies with belt fed .50 cal plus?  How about some 20 mm Oerlikons or 40 mm Bofors from WW II?

Why not put an end to amateur hour and send in the Sea Org?  They could take care of this "pirate" problem.

I've got some friends who run some ship security. I'll have to ask him if they give warning shots.

The controversy about the Maersk Alabama going too close to Somalia. The video isn't exactly hard to follow.

They likely cannot fire from stand off distances. They are likely required to be sure of the intent before using lethal force. Hence warning shots and opening up once the boat keeps coming.

Foreign ports might not allow deck mounted weapons on commercial ships?

I feel like they're trying to make contractors look bad, but in reality just showed that they were effective and worth the money.

I think this is correct.

What needs to happen is to carry a tender-ship that can store the weapon while the ship is in port and then re-attach weapon once ship leaves port.

More guards the better. Kill the pirates.

I would prefer a .308 rifle

I can't fathom the type of person who thinks that a pirate(s) attempting to board and take over a vessel shouldn't be shot on site

Yeah.  For the limp-wristed sissys in the media, killing pirates IS controversial.

Guess what my feelings are...

Yeah. "No ships guarded by security forces have been hijacked". End of discussion.

What kind of tender is going to stay that far off shore for what could be many days.  That stops being called a tender and starts being called a war ship pretty quick.

Well .50 cal and greater has a longer effective warning shot range.
