A 92-year-old cabdriver died after suffering "a possible medical episode" Thursday morning in Oakdale, his taxi careening across several residential lawns before crashing into an occupied home, police said.

Suffolk County police have not released the identity of the driver, who was operating a cab for Colonial Taxi in Sayville. Officials at the cab company were not immediately available for comment Thursday.



The single-car crash occurred on Shore Drive at 7:11 a.m., police said. Volunteers from the West Sayville Fire Department also responded.

Police said the driver was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead. Officials said they are looking at the possibility the driver suffered a fatal medical episode.

Police said the cab was headed north on Shore when it careened across several lawns, striking mailboxes, before crashing into the den of a home on Shore Drive.


Police said the home was occupied at the time, but there were no injuries inside the house. Photos from the scene showed that section of the house struck by the taxi was heavily damaged.
