Something tells me this summer is shaping up to be a bloodbath. We're barely into spring, and already we're in the throes of two major, ongoing, progressive street riots -- the race-riots in Cincinnati, and the trade riots in Quebec. We already know that most of California is going to spend the summer enmeshed in a third-world-style energy shortage; we've heard that there's good reason to expect similar shortages in New York and other urban areas. We know what happens when we have blackouts in major cities -- that's right, riots. This summer's going to be a beaut.

The especially worrisome thing, to my mind, is that there's pretty much zero direct relationship between the two riots. The Quebec demonstrations are being sparked primarily by radical left-wing labor and environmentalist groups, while the Cincinnati riots are, quite simply, flat-out race riots -- though you won't hear the mainstream media report that. (According to the New York Times, a week's worth of bloody street violence isn't a riot, it's "sporadic protests and vandalism.") The vast majority of the violence has been black-on-white, white-owned shops and businesses are the primary targets of vandalism and looting, and white citizens are the primary targets of the violence. People are getting pulled out of their cars, beaten on the sidewalk, so forth. Bricks through windows. All that good stuff. A Cincinnati grand jury has gone so far as to indict sixty-two alleged rioters for, among other things, "hate crimes" -- against white citizens. So little relationship do the Cincinnati riots bear to the left-wing agenda of the Quebec demonstrators that two members of the "far left Revolutionary Communist Party" were just hospitalized after trying to join in the Cincinnati riots. They were, unfortunately for them, white, and were hence immediately set upon by the mob they tried to join. Whoopsie.

We'll have to wait and see.  Most of the Quebec protests are the same socialist retards at the WTO meeting, Anti gun gatherings, anti death penality marches etc.  Globalizaton is going to happen regardless.  I'm worried about what its going to do to national soverenty, the environment, family farmers, and a lot of other things, but these morons seem to want to try yet another stab at making socialism work, which is exactly the WRONG answer.

As for Cinncinatti (and Seattle, and Boluxi, and Central Park, and LA, and Watts), well, lets just say I got my mags loaded...

Ever notice riots like these only happen in major cities. Why? Because they have the most restrictive gun owner laws. Shit like this doesn't happen out in rural areas or even smaller cities because they tend to have less restrictive gun ownership laws and the people defend themselves. If someone were to try pulling me out of my car and beating me in my hometown, they better hope I'm not armed and they better kill me, otherwise I'm dragging myself home and equipping myself(if you get my meaning)then I'm gonna go back and find them. I don't leave in a giant metropolis, I will find them. My guess is a riot would end pretty quickly here. The average joes wouldn't put up with it.

Yeah, but Seattle does not necessarily have restrictive gun laws.

Our riots happened because some city-council type thought bringing the WTO here would bring in $$$$.

Surprise!  We lost $ big time and got our rep smeared too.  Nice.

A lot of these protestor-types travel from conflict to conflict in order to hang out with other "socially conscious" individuals in the name of doing something important for the world and smoke pot.  Their lifestyle won't allow them to join the rest of us hard workers in good conscious.

Yeah, the main problem with the anti-WTO folks is that they're idiots; they have some legitimate concerns, but they're making themselves look like complete whackos by pushing for street violence and neo-socialism rather than, say, individualism and freedom. It's strange, and more than a little deluded.

Meanwhile, this summer's gonna be crazy. My advice? Buy a rifle.

Hi TacCar,
Riots don't happen in small cities and rual areas because small cities are not as complicated. Also, riots need masses of people. A rual area can't have a riot unless everyone riots. In a city with a million people you only need about 1000 people to riot (less than 1% of the population). Rural areas usually have a small population and most people know each other and on the same social/economical level. Why riot?.
Once you have millions of people living in an area different needs have to be met. More people cause more social and economical needs and differences. When the needs are not met it causes problems.

The anti-globalism protesters are widely recognized as brainless bozos, even among those on the Left; there have been some savage things written about them from a Liberal or Socialist perspective. For the most part they are engaging in a lifestyle more than an ideological movement. The primary goal of many of them is to travel to cool places, smoke some dope, and do some rioting. With slightly different sytlistic choices they'd be the English soccer hooligans that were immortalized in Bill Bufords "Among the Thugs."

The hard core of the rioters includes many self-proclaimed anarchists. Again, they're mostly lifestyle anarchists. A few years ago they'd have made the choice to follow the grateful dead around, or spend some time as "homeless" to prove to their parents how they were so not middle class. The pretence of anarchism gives them all that, plus the opportunity to do some exciting brick-throwing and to smash a few windows; they don't have to put up with all that hippy-dippy pacifism of the old days. They can act like rednecks after two dozen beers at the honkytonk and still have long hair and tie-dye.

The promise of some exciting vandalism will always attract a certain demographic.
