I always just left a old simcard in them.
If locked to a carrier, prob needs to be from them.

The guy is with Sprint. I think the company I'm with (Straight Talk) is compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile

I think Sprint is CDMA (like Verizon) and AT&T/tMobile is GSM.
I quit playing with them at the 4 so not sure if the newer ones have both radios in them, or are CDMA/GSM specific.

ModMyI is the site I used to look at for info on that stuff.

Either way, it will need to be unlocked to run on a different carrier.
Shouldnt be hard to do if you can get the guy to call them up and say he will be travelling outside of the country.

Sounds complicated. I'd rather just not buy it, and keep the crappy phone I got right now.

You will only get 3G service if you the Verizon straighttalk phone.

The kid says it's not unlocked but it has a clean esn, whatever that means. My daughter found him on some local facebook page

Dont bother with it.  Unless he is willing to get it unlocked for you, you are going to have a very hard time getting it working right.

And, dont bother calling Apple if you buy it (to get it unlocked). They cant do anything regarding the unlocking process.

If it is not unlocked, then it is locked to the carrier that it was made for.

ESN = electronic serial number. A clean ESN is not stolen.

Sprint will not unlock their phones for anyone, anytime, period.

Unless you plan to use it on Sprint service, steer clear.
