Bought my 9 year old son one of the 15 pound Harbor Freight mini anvils. We'll weld a hard plate on top and let him whack at it all he wants.
If he breaks it he can get a t-shirt made that says, "I broke an anvil, Watch Out!" At least that's what he says. |
I have a few old ones I got when my grandfather died.
No one else in the family wanted them and I took them, I remember when I was younger him telling me that the one was his fathers They currently sit in the back corner of the garage till I get my forge up and running again. I also have a few smaller ones I found at flea markets and antique shops. I enjoy collecting some weird shit |

My family has one, It gets passed down from father to son when the father can no longer lift it.
My grandfather bought out an old blacksmith shop in the 30's. My father got it when Grandpa was 90, he died at 102. My father is 83 and still has it. I can wait for forever to inherit it. |
I've wanted one for a long time, but decent ones are pretty expensive.
ACME just bought mine off EBay.
Good thing, I was going to throw out out the window. |
I got a 100# anvil off E-bay. Luckily it was about 100 miles away where I could pick it up FTF. Shipping is a killer.
My dad has a big one like the one in the OP. I heard they're getting hard to find and expensive, but I haven't looked for myself. Luckily I can go to dad's house for metal fabrication.
Good score OP! |

Me and a co-worker set out to find me an anvil two weeks ago. Asked any warm body we saw if they knew of anyone that might part with one. Had a lot of leads but no one would even toss out a $ number. Not selling it was the usual answer. Then this one turned up by accident less than a quarter mile from work. |

I've never watched the show, but the promos look like shit. |

The riddle of steel |
I've got one made by my great-grandfather from a piece of rail.
I have a pretty beat up anvil, but I got it free. I also have a 2' length of RR iron to beat cold stuff on. Check out the anvil thread on garagejournal.com if you want to be impressed.

One of my machinists keeps an anvil by his front door ... any date that can't pick it up is not invited in.
I have a client who collects them. He must have 100's of them.
Nice. I'm probably going to make one out of a piece of rail. A new one is just too expensive to buy and ship. I like the rail anvil in this thread, but it looks like a bitch to make with my angle grinder!

I have 2 old Peter Wrights in the shop that are around 120lbs . I bought them from an old farrier for a $100 about 20 years ago .

I have a 93 pounder with a little more sway back than I like.
I need to sell it to a "decorator" then buy a real good one. |

View Quote There is an antique store in town that has been sitting on a 92 pound Peter Wright with a nice flat face for two years at $495...... And he won't budge on the price. Some decorator dork will buy it and spray paint it gold and use it for a flower holder I'm sure. |
I've been looking for a long time. I've seen several on Craigs list for a decent price, but never when I've had any spare money. The ones that are good deals don't last long.

Could you guys that bough anvils recently post how much you paid. I'm looking to buy one and want to get an idea what they cost

I'm looking to buy one and want to get an idea what they cost View Quote Everything I've found says 2 bucks a pound isn't an unreasonable starting point. Of course being in the right place at the right time can score you one way cheaper. My boss paid $25 for a 176 pound Peter Wright quite a few years ago. I paid $1.50 a pound for mine, and although I wish I could have gotten it cheaper, I'm satisfied with the deal. ETA for used anvils. High quality new ones are stupid money. |
$2 per pound is a distant memory for any anvil in this region. There's a point when you're way ahead to buy new if it's to be used.
I would love a 100# anything to tinker on.
Odds of me finding an "old, used" anvil in this part of the country are basically zilch. |

Get a 1 inch ball bearing and a tape measure. drop the bearing from 10 inches and see how much it bounces back from the drop. the more rebound the better. Can't remember the numbers off the top of my head but I think you want around 70% rebound? google it for further reading |
