Bought my 9 year old son one of the 15 pound Harbor Freight mini anvils. We'll weld a hard plate on top and let him whack at it all he wants.

If he breaks it he can get a t-shirt made that says, "I broke an anvil, Watch Out!"

At least that's what he says.

I have a few old ones I got when my grandfather died.
No one else in the family wanted them and I took them, I remember when I was younger him telling me that the one was his fathers

They currently sit in the back corner of the garage till I get my forge up and running again.

I also have a few smaller ones I found at flea markets and antique shops.
I enjoy collecting some weird shit

You mean... Long, soft, heavy, shit made of slightly sharpened scrap plate go for it, but don't mention real sword or knife making with that shit of a show.

My family has one, It gets passed down from father to son when the father can no longer lift it.
My grandfather bought out an old blacksmith shop in the 30's.
My father got it when Grandpa was 90, he died at 102.
My father is 83 and still has it.
I can wait for forever to inherit it.

I've wanted one for a long time, but decent ones are pretty expensive.

ACME just bought mine off EBay.
Good thing, I was going to throw out out the window.

I got a 100# anvil off E-bay.  Luckily it was about 100 miles away where I could pick it up FTF.  Shipping is a killer.

My dad has a big one like the one in the OP. I heard they're getting hard to find and expensive, but I haven't looked for myself. Luckily I can go to dad's house for metal fabrication.

Good score OP!

Shockingly expensive.  I've watched a lot of them on Ebay, it's crazy what people will pay for them.

Me and a co-worker set out to find me an anvil two weeks ago.  Asked any warm body we saw if they knew of anyone that might part with one.  Had a lot of leads but no one would even toss out a $ number.  Not selling it was the usual answer.

Then this one turned up by accident less than a quarter mile from work.

I believe he is referring to the hard-hitting TV documentary series Big Giant Swords, which is indeed a "shit of a show".

Nah, he likes the iron, but hates the show.

Nice.  I'm probably going to make one out of a piece of rail. A new one is just too expensive to buy and ship. I like the rail anvil in this thread, but it looks like a bitch to make with my angle grinder!

I need to sell it to a "decorator" then buy a real good one.

There is an antique store in town that has been sitting on a 92 pound Peter Wright with a nice flat face for two years at $495......  And he won't budge on the price.  Some decorator dork will buy it and spray paint it gold and use it for a flower holder I'm sure.

I've been looking for a long time.  I've seen several on Craigs list for a decent price,  but never when I've had any spare money.   The ones that are good deals don't last long.

Everything I've found says 2 bucks a pound isn't an unreasonable starting point.  Of course being in the right place at the right time can score you one way cheaper.  My boss paid $25 for a 176 pound Peter Wright quite a few years ago.  I paid $1.50 a pound for mine, and although I wish I could have gotten it cheaper, I'm satisfied with the deal.

ETA for used anvils.  High quality new ones are stupid money.

Odds of me finding an "old, used" anvil in this part of the country are basically zilch.

Also to make sure you get a decent old anvil is the rebound test. Get a 1 inch ball bearing and a tape measure. drop the bearing from 10 inches and see how much it bounces back from the drop. the more rebound the better.  Can't remember the numbers off the top of my head but I think you want around 70% rebound? google it for further reading

Thats about what this one is, I recently inherited it and built the stand etc. I need to add tool holders to the stand, but I need a forge first.
