Does it mean that every one has a fair chance to be a doctor? an engineer? a teacher? a cop? no matter their eduction or fitness for the job? should we lower all standards just to be fair? should the government be the one to step in to level the playing field? What does the term A Fair Chance mean?

"Fair" is a place cows go to earn ribbons.

Life's not fair.  You should hire the most qualified candidates for the job.

Edit-I'm assuming "fair chance" is liberal speak for "The world may need ditch diggers, but standards should be lowered so that people who aren't cut out for (insert job here) should be allowed to do it because it's "fair."

we have a fair/equal chance at success we do NOT have a fair/equal outcome on Success..

Progressives think this is unjust and will demand everyone sink to the lowest common denominator to insure said Justice..

From what I understand, "equal opportunity" in employment means, for example, you can't refuse to hire someone because they're black, or Irish, or Catholic, or disabled, etc.

However, employers *could* refuse to hire me for any other reason they wanted OUTSIDE of the above(and some others I didn't mention. I think creed/national origin is in there.)  An employer could refuse to hire me because I have brown hair.  Or wore a green shirt to the interview.  He can't refuse to hire me because I'm a male.

I was born too early.  I never excelled in math or science.  With fairness parameters about to be mandated I could maybe be a doctor or physicist now.  I think it's going to be part of the,"share the wealth," program.

It means "I see people with better jobs... but I'm gonna ignore all the effort they put into getting there.  I fully expect to just walk into a high paying job without any effort whatsoever.  And I'm not above playing the race card or claiming you stole it from me."

Hell all I have to do is look around at work to see examples.  Or rather ... NOT see examples, cos people walk out all the time when they realize work is actually WORK.  Seriously, my company is cutting about 40 jobs by April and said to not worry cos with the high turnover rate they don't expect to actually fire anyone who WANTS to work.

it's time they stopped trying to "level" the playing field by cutting everyone else down.

a nation of ignorants is far easier to govern than a nation of thinking people, especially thinking people that think Liberty and Freedom
are key ingredients to their lives..hence the dumbing down of our education system the last 100 years.

Life is inherently unfair because humans are inherently genetically unequal. Some people are simply smarter than others, are better looking, have better memories, are more athletic, etc. and no measure of imposed "fairness" via government legislation will remedy this situation. When I hear leftist use the word "fair" it is just code speak for wealth redistribution and legislation that punishes those more successful than them.

Fair is when nonsentient AI or edited EMs outcompete the human species and conquer the stars. Unfair is when scumbag socialists force them to divert resources to market parasites like consciousness, nonmarket values, or DNA based organisms.

It means that people who aren't qualified to do those jobs are going to be in those jobs.  Because making people perform to a standard is unfair and holding them back, keeping them down so to speak...

This. Fair should mean merit based.

A good example would be getting into Harvard. Student 1 has better grades and test scores that student 2. Student 2 gets in because daddy gave the school a check.

A better example would be the father (the .gov supported by the voting mob) forcing the school to accept both students even though there's a 3rd student that the school wants instead of student 2.
Or just substitute employer/employee in place of school/student.

Funny you should mention that.  There was a thread recently where Intel has a new diversification policy for their company.  They want to increase their number of "non Asian minorities"...

So if you in a minority that works hard studies hard and accomplishes goals your not the minority they are looking for...

This PC crap is going to be our downfall!

Fair chance = whatever the hell an elected official says is fair. I'm sure those same words have been uttered out of Castro & Gaddafi numerous times.

It's Marxist-ese for anything but fair. Small price to pay for utopia.
