How many of you have heard of taking a piece of leftover cornbread and breaking it up in a nice cold glass of buttermilk and eating it like cereal? I saw my grandfather do this many nights when I spent the night over there as a kid. We would be watching the Braves game and he would go grab a leftover piece of cornbread and make us this snack. But when I tell people I eat this now I always get

It is very common here in s.w. va. My mother loved it. I eat it on occasion, but prefer sweet milk and corn bread.

Milk + cornbread + a little sugar = poor people cereal. I used to eat it a lot as a kid, back when I was a hillbilly...

I do this all the time, love cornbread and buttermilk with salt and pepper. My grandpa and my dad always did it too.

A slice of butterted toast in a bowl with regular milk poured over it. Seen this a number of times in front of a Southerner.

I think if it was not for buttermilk, cornbread, and pinto beans, a lot of us hillbillies just would not be around today because our parents or grandparents would not have survived. I remember my gramma telling me about sometimes for supper all they had was a piece of cornbread -- dirt poor, her mom died when she was a kid, NW Ark. I still remember her doing the glass of buttermilk and cornbread. I am more of a hot cornbread, butter, and molasses person myself.

That was a favorite snack of my Grandparents. Im 47yrs old and can admit that I've never tasted buttermilk, I can't get past the terrible smell.

Sorry, had buttermilk as a kid 54 years ago, did not like it then.
My Dad did, and pickled pigs feet and horseradish for a snack. Ringed liver pudding, -kishka- I liked that till I grew up and found out what it was. Oddly, I want some of it all, with crackers, right now. Skip the buttermilk and red horseradish though. |

Break it up in a big glass (not really crumbled, it's better in "chunks"), then a touch of salt and pepper and cover liberally with buttermilk. Hell yeah!
