Surefire G2X Pro is my nightstand flashlight.
http://www.surefire.com/g2x-pro.html I use 15 lumen to tuck kids in and go pee. I use 320 to light the whole house or backyard up. For your purpose, get the G2X Tactical, straight 320 lumens. ETA: Surefire G2 LED on carbine and Streamlight TLR2 wiff da beamz on my 9 M&P. |

Streamlight TLR-3 mounted on a Glock 19. For non-defensive, kiss-the-kids-goodnight-and-tuck them-back-in "work," just some little Olight LED 1xAA model I got a few of a few years ago. Nothing fancy, works just fine in getting stuff done around the house.

Surefire P2X Fury Defender (500 Lumens) attached to my AR15 300 blackout (10.5) w/ Eotech 512
The light runs about $150 but is worth EVERY penny! I swear it's actually brighter than 500 Lumens but either way you don't wanna be a bad guy and get lit up by this thing cause your night vision will be ruined for about 30 minutes or more

Guys, I specifically said in the OP that I was looking for one that DIDNT attach to a gun since my CZ 75 DOESNT have a rail. What do you guys do? Post lights that are attached to your guns. Evidently your only reading the title and not the opening post. Geehz. Lol

Streamlight Polytac. Cheap enough that I have a variety around the house and cars. One on the nightstand makes sense. Normally used for finding stuff that fell under the bed, since I have a TLR1 on my HD gun.

After buying cheap flashlights and having them fail, I would go with a reputable company for your home defense light. I just bought an Olight that I really like but have not used it enough to know if it would be for home defense. I would not have any problem recommending Surefire or Streamlight, though.

Twist and tighten etc. You have no way to verify that it's on "fuck you" mode out the gate unless you set it on that and never ever touch it again. They are nice, solid built flashlights with decent beams that take 18650's. The m20 rides in my truck now, it's a light that's staying around for a while, but won't ever be nightstand because I can't be sure it's set on high. |

Nice bright hot-spot with plenty enough splash to light up a room, but not so bright you get a ton of bounce back. Believe it or not, there is such a thing as too much light when you wake up in the middle of the night to investigate a noise. |

X300U on a G41 or Wilson CQB Tactical LE 1911. If no light mount a Surefire Peacekeeper 600 lumen handheld.
EDIT: What I love about the peacekeeper is that it is a rechargeable light. I still am using the one battery 4 weeks later while the other is in the charger. This time of year it's dark up here in Alaska land almost all the time. The light gets used constantly. Good batteries!

I think the suggestion for the Surefire G2X was a solid answer.
If you stick with the B by the bedside, than go with this. Having said that, it's hard to substitute for a mounted light. The 75 B is a damn fine pistol and I'm a CZ fanboi until the end, but the SP-01 is what you seek. Light + 2 additional rounds in the mag. The 75 was designed as a military/police sidearm, not a home defense gun where you'll be using it mainly at night. |

That's when I don't have the one mounted on the rifle, or the handgun.

Not really as bright as i would like for a flashlight works indoors though.
Also have a stream light that is really bright but not a defensive weapon haha. |
