Could you do it? January 18, 2015 Usually at some point in the day (and for some of us, multiple points) many of us find ourselves wishing we could abandon our responsibilities to return back to our beds to live out the rest of the day under a quiet refuge of blankets. Despite the guilt of chronic laziness, a day in bed sounds pretty darn relaxing—if only we could financially support ourselves by doing so. Turns out, NASA might have the answer we're all looking for-although it might require a little more relaxation that originally imagined. NASA is currently looking for volunteers to participate in their "Bed Rest Studies", in which participants will have to spend 70 straight days in bed, receiving $18,000 for the period of affressive bodily atrophy. Participants are allowed to read books, Skype, play games, as well as use their phones and computers throughout the duration of the study. Pretty much anything is fair game, so as long as you remain in bed, earning a cool $1200 per week. more @ link ETA: link to NASA application page |

I doubt it. Id gain so much weight back in 70 days of sitting on my ass not being able to exercise.

Shit, even my lazy ass would have a hard time doing that. But, I'm also currently unable to make $18k in 70 days, so maybe I'd give it a shot .

No shower for 70 days?!?!
Much as I want to do nothing for a couple of months, I'm going to need to be able to shower on a daily basis. |
|
Does 100% oxygen and no gravity have an effect on whether the body atrophies faster? Also, i'm sure there are gonna be some do then sue for getting pressure sores afterwards.

Could you image what your post count would be after 70 days of not leaving bed.

BTDT
Paralyzed from the neck down for 4 months+ in 2012. Re-learning to crawl and eventually walk was a bitch. Hardest thing I've ever done. And my bills from Rush and Mayo were a lot more than $18,000. Muscular atrophy is a frightening thing. |

When my sister inlaw was in med school they were given a copy of a US Army study. The Army asked for volunteers to stay in bed X months. By the time it was over the volunteers were regretting their decision. Loss of muscle, weakness, etc.

If you literally have to lay down for 70 days... not even allowed to sit up let alone go take a dump like a normal person, no way is that worth it.
|
|
Well shit my wife has a decent job and i might get laid off from mine Where do I sign up? |
|
no way,it would only be 2-3 days before I went insane and started flinging feces.
|
|
I saw a show on this. There's a control group that actually gets to exercise on a treadmill, vertically. So your weight is not on your legs.
|
|
Wouldn't be too bad if I could just get drunk, masturbate, and shit myself the whole time. Kinda like a typical weekend, just longer.

Are they still looking for people? Or did the OP just catch up to the internet? http://www.forbes.com/sites/crossingborders/2013/09/18/nasa-will-pay-18000-to-watch-you-rest-in-bed-for-real/ |

Basically, are you willing to confine yourself to a 3x8 cell for 2 months?
ETA: "You’re probably wondering how it all works out with taking a trip to the bathroom while on extended bed rest, right? NASA has it covered. In order to ensure that test subjects can remain at a six-degree head tilt at all times, they are able to shower in a specially modified shower gurney." Fuck that...you have to be tilted the entire time..no thanks. |

It's awesome that NASA is still spending money on ermahgerd space will kill you studies. It's not like we don't know about working out in space. Or doing cardio without running. Let's spend more money. |

I saw what laying around in bed did to my friend who had ALS.
His skin started to rot and even though the blankets were changed everyday and he bathed he smelled like meat left on the porch. His whole room did. But I dunno a small stint of rot for 17k, hmmmm... How much .22 can I get with that? |
|
$18k is great....but imagine my post count after 70 days of 350 posts per day....

If we're not going to space anymore, why are we spending money on this?
