Just picked up a new 1911. It came with Checkmates. I have had good experience with CMI rifle mags, just figured I'd ask how they stack up versus Chip McCormick Shooting Stars in your opinion.
8 round mags, if it makes any difference.

I carry a 1911 most days. Its CMC SSs in stainless for me. They have been flawless. YMMV.

Who has the best price on CMC's right now?
Sorry for the hijack OP. |
I use Wilson Combat Elite Tactical magazines for all of my carry 1911's.
I use Shooting Star for my range time.
I like the CMC ones a lot. I also have a bunch of Checkmate in 9mm and they are nice also. Quality seems even to me.

Wilson 8rd are best 8rd. I carry with SA 7+1 loaded, and a Wilson 8rd reload. |
I use CMC and Wilson. Never had a problem with either. Might try Tripps, but at their price, I'm not leaping on them to replace the flawless mags that I already have.
You get what you pay for with Tripps. All this buy once cry once junk on this board, but apparently not when it comes to 1911's.
I've had no issues with my Shooting Stars...
...however I now prefer the Brownells mags. They are reliable and affordable. |
Do the checkmates work?
As an aside; If they are the extended tubes you can put Tripp spring kits in them. |

I have both CMC and CMI mags and they both work extremely well in my 1911.
That being said if CDNN has CMC mags for $15/ea that's definitely the way to go. Off to spend more money.

If you're military or LE, call Checkmate and get the industry price. I buy 10-12 8 or ten rounders every year and when I have a problem, I toss the mag. Our guys that carry them on duty have had better luck with the Checkmates than with Wilson's, Tripps, McCormick's, or other expensive mags. People treat 1911 mags like they are a national treasure. The Checkmates are reliable until they're not and they're cheap enough to toss and buy more. I know this is heresy to lots of 1911 experts, but my guys carrying them on duty and putting 7-10k rounds of full house 230 .45 ammo through their pistols every year while carrying them in rain and the weather seem to do fine. The blued ones rust, however, so you have to wipe them down with a rag and disassemble them if they get wet.

I don't know anything about checkmates 1911 mags, but fuck them with a rusty trident for the shit Sig mags they make.

Run CMI hybrid lip welded in both my 3.5" (7 round) and my 5" (8 round). Function flawlessly and smooooth in both. Nick |

Never had an issue with any power mag, never
I cant say that about tripp or wilson i've tried them all i keep one wilson around that runs well no luck with tripp at all i bought three of each at the same time for testing in colt sig kimber 1911s |

Hands down ......Chip McCormick SS Shooting Stars for the win. I own 12 of those bad boys and they are all flawless.
Just looked through the 1911 box.. about 1/3 Novak, 1/3 CMC (powermag and shooting star), 1/3 Wilson. Those 3 are all damn good, and I doubt I'll ever get another 1911 magazine, unless it comes with a pistol... Since I have over 100 of the damn things (All 8 rounds)
CMC aren't terrible. I own a handful but only use them at the range. Wilson 47D is what I run all other times.

I had issues with the stock mags for my SR1911 from day one. My Wilsons have been flawless.

I use the Chip McCormick shooting star without a problem, but I picked up a McCormick powermag and it chokes like a virgin prom date.

Yepp switching over from Chips and Wilsons to Tripps atm. The build quality of the Cobras seems to be far superior to either. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:
