http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holodomor
a man-made famine in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1932 and 1933 that killed estimated 2.5-7.5 million Ukrainians.

...
From the 1932 harvest, Soviet authorities were able to procure only 4.3
million tons as compared with 7.2 million tons obtained from the 1931
harvest.
Rations in town were drastically cut back, and in the winter of 1932–33
and spring of 1933 people in many urban areas were starved. The urban workers were supplied by a rationing
system (and therefore could occasionally assist their starving
relatives of the countryside), but rations were gradually cut; and by
the spring of 1933, the urban residents also faced starvation. At the
same time, workers were shown agitprop
movies, where all peasants were portrayed as counterrevolutionaries
hiding grain and potatoes at a time when workers, who were constructing
the "bright future" of socialism, were starving.
...
Scholars disagree on the relative importance of natural factors and bad
economic policies as causes of the famine but believe it was long term
plan of Joseph Stalin, an attempt to eliminate the Ukrainian independence movement.

Are you just learning of this?

I recall being taught about it in 8th grade World History.

When the definition of genocide was being established, Stalin fought for the exclusion of 'class or socio-economic status' from that definition so the USSR couldn't be accused of genocide against the Ukraine or others he had killed.

Just curious:

1) how old are you?

2) what state was this in?

3) public or private school?

I'm 36, I went to public school in Westchester cnty, NY (wealthy area with very good schools) and the only reason I ever heard of was because I was an avid reader as a child and both of my parents were huge history buffs.

I learned about this in HS in MA, but only in passing, along with the millions who starved to death in China's Great Leap Forward in the 1960s. It was treated like an error, like a wrong turn. It wasn't until I got to college that I learned how bad it all was.

Horrific.

I used it as an example of the evils of Marxism in a paper in high school.

Fuck Stalin.

When I was in primary school it was still the height of the Cold War. We were taught about the evils of communism.

Of course we were also taught to "duck and cover" to protect us from atomic bombs. Even as a 1st grader I thought that was pretty fucking stupid.

I had some hard core teachers that shed light on the true nature of communism. Communism was bad ju-ju and they didn't mind telling you why.
