At the 2015 Detroit Auto show, Hyundai showed off the Santa Cruz concept. It's likely based on their Santa Fe SUV. It's powered by a 2.0l Turbocharged diesel 190hp 300fpt Seems like a pretty good replacement for the El Camino. Infinately more practical than the vast majority of full sized pickups that are being used to get grocerys.

Why not? It would handle most, if not all of my hauling needs.
|
|
Oh yeah, it's also supposed to get in the high 30's mpg. I really hope they produce it.

Like it.
Hyundai too, so you know the price will be reasonable. |

It actually has an extending bed. Will supposedly fit a motorcycle diagonally.
Supposedly mid 20's for price. |
|
Reminds me of the VehiCross. I'd drive it, although from what I've seen of Korean diesels leads me to believe they could use some refinement.

I'll spend another few grand and get a full size crew cab 4x4 with the gasser v-8. With the disparity in gas and diesel prices you wouldn't be saving any money on fuel. Something like this shouldn't be more than 14-17k for a well equipped 2wd or even awd version. |

Why not just put the fucking diesel into the Sonata/Santa Fe right now?

Would rather get a Colorado which is supposed to get a diesel soon I believe.
But, I like the idea. The new round of GM "small" trucks seem as big as half-tons were 15 years ago or so. For 95% of what I use it for, these mini-trucks would do great. Really I just want something efficient, while big enough inside to be comfortable and a bed big enough to throw hunting / range gear and coolers in. That being said I love my '14 Silverado. But it really is more truck than I actually need. |

MEH.
I would buy it, but diesel up here isn't worth the trouble unless you are pulling freight with it. If I lived somewhere warmer, and could get it with a manual transmission I might consider it, lifestyle requirements permitting.... |

A similarly equipped Ram 1500 SLT w/ EcoDiesel, crew cab, 4wd, short box is $42,000ish MSRP. Pretty big difference. If you are going to go for a work truck trim Ram over a fairly loaded Colorado, that's fine, but if you compare apples to apples (as far as specs), and you don't need the capacity of the Ram, the Colorado is less expensive. |

If the production models are close to the concept I'll be buying the wife one.

I would love something like this, but with 3 kids, I'll stick to my suburban and trailer if I need to haul something.

That is almost totally useless as a truck Not everyone needs to haul the entire job site in the back of their truck. I'd be the target market. Home owner, needs an efficient commuter, yet needs a truck for the 12-18 times a year that gravel/sand/bricks/bulky stuff needs to be moved.
Currently have a 4-cyl Tacoma. Not speedy, but fast enough, and has the torque to haul a half ton of gravel. |

If this concept makes it to market, I'll take a look at it. |

It would make for a great everyday driver and keep my 01 Ram for the heavier stuff.

I'd definitely buy one!
Got land in the mountains a couple hours away, be nice to have a AWD small diesel pickup that gets 30+ mpg, can haul mini-bike or 4-wheeler, wood, deer, etc and handle the snow, dirt and mud. Got an old Jeep Cherokee now, that gets 15 mpg and isn't that good at hauling wood, atv's or deer. It's about time for something new and this would fit the bill. |
|
Chevrolet El Camino, Ford Ranchero, Jeep CJ-8, Subaru Brat, Subaru Baja, Ford Explorer Sport Trac, Honda Ridgeline. It's been tried and tried with various sized platforms and success (mostly not). Hell Hyundai didn't even have it prominently displayed in their area at the North American International Auto Show that I just got back from last week.
The 2016 Chevrolet Colorado will come with a diesel engine and be light-years more functional and usable than this, if Hyundai ever produces it.

Again, not everyone needs a big truck to tow huge loads or reaffirm their masculinity. That thing is half recreational. Which I like. I don't give a damn if it doesn't tow a flat trailer with a backhoe. |
