Always term.  Whole life is a rip-off.

Started with WholeLife. Later canceled and got Term.

This.  And you only need it for as long as your family is dependent on your income.  For instance if you and your wife are retired and have a good income from a 401k it is not needed.  No dependants?  Not needed.
