Any input appreciated. I know nothing and  online reviews are, well, online reviews.

I have one I bought a couple years ago.

Good for surfing the web when visiting the wife's mother.

Easier to haul around than a full fledged laptop

Is there a particular reason she wants a Chromebook and not a tablet?

They're great, and Chrome OS is getting better and better with more updates. It comes with the Google version of word processing, number processing, drive, gmail, etc etc...

Overall great for web stuff, but if you like being able to install apps it's not the greatest

I prefer android OS on a tablet, more usable without rooting/jailbreaking.

Only downside of android is the manufacturer branding, and OS updates are laggy or non-existant.

Downside of iOS, is that the newer OS makes anything but the latest gen HW a piece of crap.  My ipad 2 and iphone 5 have been getting worse as the OS gets newer.

I'd rather a tablet. Had a chrome book, sold it when I got my iPad.

They're not a bad idea for the average user's disposable machine.  Most of what's out there on the low end of the price scale has 2gb of ram or less, you're going to want a bit more than that.  IMO right now, 2gb is about right.  You want a bit more to make the machine last a while.

This is a kid, right?  No kid needs high-end electronics.
Fuck that.  Late teens?  Maybe.

A chrome book is not exactly high end.

My daughter has one because alot of her homework is somehow related to Google drive.  It is fine as a simple machine, but can't do all the things a full laptop can do.......as a web surfing/homework/word processing device it is great, anything more there are better options.

She wants one because her Windows 8 unit is a straight POS. She likes Chrome browser and gmail and her homework is easier with it. She's 15. I found an ASUS  13.3" HD screen at BestBuy for $249 ($223 on Amazon with free shipping) It's a decent unit for what it is. I hate the Windows 8 crap too...that's I'm still rocking the Windows 7 on my six year old Gateway!

roy d...she's not into the windows or apple formats

My daughter is the same age, and is using it for the same things.  We got hers off a Woot special, a bit smaller but was $150 shipped, it will work fine for what she needs it for.

Been using one of these as a dev unit at work. Tegra K1 is a capable chipset. http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Chromebook-CB5-311-T7NN-13-3-inch-NVIDIA/dp/B00MHX6V88

As for porting software to Chrome Native Client, it fucking sucks
