Crazy.  I was just reading up on some vietname stuff.

I think my dad was in  cam ranh bay? On c130's
I need to ask him to tell us more stuff.

Anyway, was wondering how many herky birds were lost (55) and saw that the total aircraft losses were close to ten thousand aircraft.

I wonder how many we pushed off the carrier or ditched as well.....

ask him now,  I can't ask my dad anymore and regret it.

I've read that we lost slightly more than 5,000 helicopters, half of which were shot down.

Seems like a staggering number for such a tiny sliver of jungle on a globe.

I wonder what the ww2 losses were.

Just US aircraft losses in WWII were "nearly 95,000" per Wikipedia.

Yes. But we flew all over Europe. In comparison, Vietnam isn't all that big. I wonder what the crash per Sq mile and per day is between the two.

You forget---we weren't allowed to fight a REAL war; and often--high value military and industrial targets were denied to the military due to politics.
Had there been no politics; we would've crushed those communist motherfuckers.

It was safer to be on the front lines, than in a Aircraft in WW2.

When I was 10 (USAF brat) I told my dad I wanted to fly helicopters. He told me that if you took every helicopter we lost in Vietnam and lined them up end to end across Vietnam you could walk across the country (width) on the helicopters. I don't know if he was just being sarcastic or not, I just remember him telling me that. Changed my mind pretty quick.

Many of us who served back then believed that McNamera lost the war by trying to manage it from a desk in Washington using operations research optimization models and other shit he dreamed up assigning different points values to different targets.

This DID NOT work because the battlefield was a fluid and fast changing situation.

Also, I have always heard that the Red Chinese told LBJ and McNamera that they had a secret treaty with North Vietnam and if we started winning too much, the Chinese would send a million men into Vietnam just like they did in Korea years before (1951).  This apparently scared LBJ and McNamera shitless.
