Many of us who served back then believed that McNamera lost the war by trying to manage it from a desk in Washington using operations research optimization models and other shit he dreamed up assigning different points values to different targets.
This DID NOT work because the battlefield was a fluid and fast changing situation.
Also, I have always heard that the Red Chinese told LBJ and McNamera that they had a secret treaty with North Vietnam and if we started winning too much, the Chinese would send a million men into Vietnam just like they did in Korea years before (1951). This apparently scared LBJ and McNamera shitless.
