The Mrs. and I disagree on what a reasonable grocery budget is for a family of four. 2 adults, a 1 year old and a 3 year old.

Me and the expecting wife. 75-100 a week depending on the meat. Fortunately we have game in the freezer which cuts down the costs.

With Judicious use of Aldi, coupons, and some planning, I can keep it under $300 with The wife, Myself, an 18 and 10 year old boy, and a 16 year old girl. I budget $500, but the leftovers go into savings.

The biggest secret I've found is to set the stay at home wife down with the coupons, and to buy stuff in bulk for cheap. If we didn't do this, I think it would go quite a bit over $500.

The only sacrifice we make is that we end up eating the same stuff over and over if it's on sale.. but I usually have at least enough stuff to keep it to having the same thing no more than every third night. My kids are picky anyway, so variety is not the spice of life, and I'll budget extra if I want to try out something new.

We never kept track. I know that it does vary from week to week depending on what we are hungry for.

All other things we keep track of and watch but not food….. it is the one item that we don't monitor.

We cook at home 6 days a week. We are not overly extravagant …… we rarely buy lobster and very high priced items but we eat pretty good.

Probably around $600/month for myself/wife/5 yr old daughter.

We eat well/healthy and tend to keep a healthy stock of staples around the house.

I don't do coupons but will usually buy cheaper/off-brand stuff when possible.

Slick deals + sams will get you where youre going

Under 100 bucks in winter, less in late spring and summer.

Just put a Steer in the Freezer, at $2.85lb total cost.
Chickens got butchered last fall and have .90 cents a lb into them.
We trade fruit that we grow for pork. Fish and game is whatever the Tag cost.

LOTS of veggie growing and bartering goes on, as well as canning and freezing.
Onions get bought in bulk in the Fall along with Taters, and stored in the basement.

Fresh produce, Wine, cheese, Coffee and in season fruits, is where we end up spending the $$
I honestly don't understand how people can afford the prices, at the higher end grocery stores. It's just plumb nuts, and us Growers aren't driving those prices.

Hmm, pretty sure the game in my freezer cost several times as much as if I'd bought the same amount of meat from the grocery store. But I did have fun killing it all, though.

I eat steak 4 times a week and pork or chicken 3 times. I am single, I spend about 500 a month on groceries. I am well fed, and so are my dogs. If I get a steak, they get one too!

Honestly, I think it depends on whether you are trying to save money, or whether money is not a concern.

We live close to the store now, and I go at least 4 times a week. I'll spend at least $30 each time. Call it $500 per month. Plus, I'll go to Costco once a month, Maybe $150 ish worth of groceries.
Plus, I'll spend ~$50 on restaurants. So $700, plus whatever my wife spends, which thankfully, isn't much.
Call it $800. We have never done an actual budget, because thankfully, I've always earned more than we spend.

We could easily cut that in half, I think. It would be interesting to try. The kids love rice and Ramen. Fwiw, Family of 4 Two adults, two kids.

As an aside, do you shop at Walmart? If you do, you should be using the savings catcher app. I only occasionally shop there and so far I've gotten back almost $40 bucks in about 6 months of use.

I can only imagine the savings would be much more substantial if I was shopping for a family of 4 instead of 1.

One of the boys eats like a man, and shit is expensive in phoenix. The cheapest cuts of meat are $6+ a lb and there is only so much chicken i can eat. Forget seafood its all imported stuff, the closest to domestic I can find is Mexican shrimp and those run $17 lb.

ETA: We really don't try and save on food. If we did it would be $100 a month on beans, rice, and Chinese fish.

About 400 bucks when I'm in normal mode...Single, large framed guy.
I've never actually separated food from "stuff I get at the grocery store".

I'd say about 300 bucks.

What's nice is that 4 out of every eight days I pull 12 hour shifts and the
prison and I eat two meals there in the officer dining room. I get in a little
early, and leave a little late, but it's free food. I'm a humble state employee
so I do what I can.

I try to keep it under 300 a month. Not easy to do since I live on meat mainly and have an expensive energy drink addiction. I watch the walmart for cuts of beef getting marked down when they turn not so fresh.

Our diet is protein centric (meat).... it is so expensive......

Fuck carbs though...

We both take lunches from home and eat out at lunch maybe 1-2 times weekly.

Restaurant dinners maybe 3 times monthly.

With 2 adults and 2 pre-teens we spend about 800-900 per month. If you exclude the wife's wine, it would be about 600-700. we buy very few processed foods and try to stick to sale/in season fruits and vegetables.

Does anyone get as pissed as me when you see food prices? Saw $4.99/lb for asparagus yesterday and about shit my pants!
