Not a whole lot of fun, especially with the motor still in the truck.
You do know that it takes a shit-ton of miles to cause that, right? You're probably looking at something with over 300k miles |

If you are looking at buying a truck with " loose timing chain" don't do it it has more problems |

Could it be a timing chain tensioner or guide problem?

if has a worn timing chain at under 200,000 miles then it saw very few oil changes or was ran with little oil in the engine. Don't buy it. ASE master diesel tech.

Also a lack of oil that can cause chain rattle can wipe out the passenger side cam. That's the last part to get oiled on a Triton and if the engine was run low on oil, it could have starved that cam. Replacing it is no fun in the truck, even less so than the chains.

They are a big PITA.
But not as bad as a 5.4l Triton 3v. I think there is close to 20 bolts holding the valve cover on. Lol. I had to rebuild my wife's 04 F150 after it dropped a valve and knocked a hole in piston. |

Not hard or complicated, you just need to know what you are doing and take your time. I pulled a head on my 99 f150, did it with the engine in the truck, in a barn with basic hand tools.
Most important tool is pictured here. 
Timing marks make it easy to put the chains on.
