Out of the calls I've had to responded to regarding a dog attacking a child, the pit bull has been involved most often. Just my .02 anecdotal evidence.

It would be wise for people to read up on Dmitry Belyaev and the Soviet fox experiments to get a better understanding of domestication and the regression of animal breeds. Pit Bulls can quickly kill most anything when/if they get pissed, ill, altered, or simply want to screw something up. Fact: Having an unpredictable ANIMAL you can't reason with, that's capable of changing your life forever in 2 seconds of uncharacteristic behavior, in a house with small children, might not be the best call. Fact: Some folks love their dogs so much they ignore 1 and 2 above, because that could never happen to them, their sweet puppy has never, and will never, do anything uncharacteristic, no matter how old, sick, blind, or senile they get. Fact: Quite a few folks this has never happened to, (yet) will take offense at 1, 2, and 3, above. |

Fact: there is somewhere between a 0.000115% and 0.00046% chance that any given pit bull would seriously attack someone. Fact: your chance of being mauled by a pit bull is about 0.0000003% Seriously, find some other bogeyman to wet your pants about. The way some of you blather on about it, you would think you were terrified of anything that could possibly cause you harm, including the kitchen sink and your own shadow.

Still have all my fingers and toes (mostly). Still wouldn't let kids play with them unsupervised. It's not what will happen, it's what might. Cost vs benefit. I just don't see "I like pits" as being a reasonable explanation for taking the risk, given animals sometimes do things completely out of character, with zero warning. If you want a pit, go for it. Not suggesting anyone should have their pit "regulated". Just don't try to justify it, if you think justification isn't necessary. Fairly certain there are a huge number of folks out there whose babies never hurt a fly. Until they did. |
