I have mild asthma but this has never happened before.  I woke unable able to breath just taking short rapid breaths with a high pitched gasp. I was able to walk to the living room and slowy was able to inhale with effort and then it stopped.  My wife started to call EMS but I seem fine now.  My heart rate didn't seem to increase during the event.

I hit my inhaler and started watching TV to see I am going to keep breathing.

Any ideas?

I'd probably talk to a real doctor.  Good luck getting back to sleep tonight.

You also might need a sleep study.

I really don't want to sleep right now.  I will probably call my Dr in the morning.  I seem fine right now.

Sleep apnea.  I get that on occasion if I sleep on my back, but it clears up within a few seconds.

Overweight?

How long ago did you eat?

Is your head propped at all by your pillow?

The reason I ask these specific questions, I had the same thing happen to me and the doc said I needed to lose weight, not eat 2-3 hours before going to bed and try to keep my chest and head slightly propped up to prevent my stomach's contents from backing up against my esophagus.

Respiratory event=load and go (i.e. load PT into ambulance and roll), even if things seem okay at the moment.

20 lbs overweight. I haven't eaten recently. Head propped.

I did burp a few times after I started breathing again.

Sleep study.

Try sleeping in a recliner tonight. Laid back but your head slightly elevated.

Do you have acid reflux symptons?

Probably sleep apnea, based on your limited info.  Assuming you werent wheezing, just gasping?

Try sitting up, like in a recliner, while sleeping until that sleep study.

Start losing weight too, though that doesnt help all forms.

That was another thing that I had extremely bad before losing some weight and changing my diet. Once I took care of my reflux, waking up gasping for air pretty much stopped.

This.  I had the same morning wake ups.  Went to the ENT doc and he told me that acid reflux is causing my upper throat to inflame, thus causing this result

OP, go to ENT doc, have them scope your throat

I've heard thin white males are more likely to wake up with a collapsed lung for whatever reason... serious.

Go to sleep and keep your airway as open as possible.  Think CPR open.  It's pretty unlikely that you'll die in your sleep tonight.
