Mmmmmmm, Dana Delaney looks like a million dollars.    Playing on AMC as I type, surely the best western of the last twenty or so years.

Johnny Ringo: [Ringo steps up to Doc] And you must be Doc Holliday.

Doc Holliday: That's the rumor.

Johnny Ringo: You retired too?

Doc Holliday: Not me. I'm in my prime.

Johnny Ringo: Yeah, you look it.

Doc Holliday: And you must be Ringo. Look, darling, Johnny Ringo. The deadliest pistoleer since Wild Bill, they say. What do you think, darling? Should I hate him?

Kate: You don't even know him.

Doc Holliday: Yes, but there's just something about him. Something around the eyes, I don't know, reminds me of... me. No. I'm sure of it, I hate him.

Wyatt Earp: [to Ringo] He's drunk.

Doc Holliday: In vino veritas.

["In wine is truth" meaning: "When I'm drinking, I speak my mind"]

Johnny Ringo: Age quod agis.

["Do what you do" meaning: "Do what you do best"]

Doc Holliday: Credat Judaeus apella, non ego.

["The Jew Apella may believe it, not I" meaning: "I don't believe drinking is what I do best."]

Johnny Ringo: [pats his gun] Eventus stultorum magister.

["Events are the teachers of fools" meaning: "Fools have to learn by experience"]

Doc Holliday: [gives a Cheshire cat smile] In pace requiescat.

["Rest in peace" meaning: "It's your funeral!"]

Tombstone Marshal Fred White: Come on boys. We don't want any trouble in here. Not in any language.

Doc Holliday: Evidently Mr. Ringo's an educated man. Now I really hate him.

Sorry. It's a great movie, but Unforgiven is the best "modern" western.

Tombstone was the last movie to use the church (opening scene) before it, and many other structures were lost in a fire at Old Tucson Studios. That church was in many other movies, including "El Dorado", starring The Duke and Robert Mitchum.

I have a good buddy from Tombstone. His last name is Grimshaw and his great grandparents were the undertakers there when the OK Corral shit happened.

He told me that the movie is fairly historically accurate. He pointed out the masonic necklace the one guy in the posse was wearing.

Best line: "I'll be your huckleberry".

I like Tombstone, but I'd easily put Open Range above it.

I like that a lot.

As for other movies mentioned--I find Unforgiven to be ugly and mean spirited.  I do not like it at all.  Open Range is very good, but not over the top like Tombstone.  Great gunfight.  The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, as it's played on movie channels, has swelled to a four hour movie, lots of outtakes edited in, I guess.  It's entertaining and over the top, but silly.

A more recent Western I do get a kick out of is The Quick And The Dead, with Sharon Stone, Robert Duvall, Russell Crowe, and many character actors, including Lance Henriksen.  It's also silly, but entertaining.

Had Unforgiven never been made, you might be right. Well, that and 3:10 to Yuma, that is.
