My daughter has decided on Pre-Med as a major!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She wants to be a Doctor

She is starting her Junior year and has emphasized biology and chemistry thus far.  4.0 GPA and very wise for a kid her age.

I am very happy about this decision although I'll probably die in the poor house

Jim

She does, she is very near to obtaining her mortician license.

ETA: She loves shooting and fishing. She got that part from me. Her looks and brains came from momma.

Tell her to pick her specialty very carefully.

Some fields of medicine are gonna be less screwed than others.

And congrats!!

Prepare for the stress. My ex is doing her PhD in molecular biology and her sister is doing the neurosurgeon route... Both of them are off and on crying and huddling in balls because of the pressure and the stress

Also med school is really messed up from what I hear, it's ridiculous the hours they make you go through and the hoops involved in publishing papers and proposals.

I haven't bought .22 in about a year.  I do still live in the basement due to being in school though.

I debt free though and I like guns!

See, for some reason, when I saw the thread title, I thought it would be a thread about a new gun someone bought.

But yeah, daughter going to med school is pretty good too.

Good.  Unlike the english major, political science, art and dance major, she'll have a job.

My niece went pre-med in college.

She got good grades, stressed out, derailed, went home and spun in place for a while. After about 2 years she's back in school, but going for a nursing degree instead of an MD.

Support your daughter and know that medicine isn't for everyone.

She's off to a good start. Organic chemistry is frequently the big stumbling block for those trying for medical school.

Good luck to her!

Exactly this.  Some practices/teams are really investment groups.  If things are planned out ahead of time, there will be a lot less bullshit before cash starts flowing.

This.  Doctors are leaving the business in droves.  Hope she likes .gov in her business.  Help her choose wisely and tell her to do some research before getting to far in.  Research may be a better path.

Excellent!

I liked chemistry in college too, so I took extra chemistry classes as electives when I was in pharmacy school.

Quite a few of my classmates struggled with 2nd year organic though, as did many of the pre-med crowd.

Research is hell unless you get in with a good private research firm and do something amazing while somehow retaining some ownership and royalties.

My ex has worked on some pretty amazing cancer research projects that has put a lot of good information out there and she will NEVER be rich. Hell they barely can scrape by to get funding to work let alone profit.

It's sad to think that sports stars and musicians  get millions and the people who could cure cancer barely can eat out once and awhile.
