Pine tar, for grip.  Notice the fella's hands and bat are covered in it as well.

Pine tar and superstition.  A lot of people think it is bad luck to clean their helmets.

Pine tar. If the ball sticks to your helmet it's an inside-the-park homerun.

I wish my college team was that sanitary. Usually was socks or sliding shorts

Pine tar on it allows the batter to get a better grip on the bat. Having it on the helmet keeps it within reach during the at bat without having to go back to the on deck circle, which I believe is illegal during the AB.

That and it kept my helmet from smelling like sweat.

New guys gotta learn somehow.

Watching, asking and learning makes old farts feel useful.

See, they just heard George Carlin's comparison between football and baseball,  and they're jealous of the football players. Sort of like the high school football player who gets his first chance to play 1/2 way through the game; he'll reach down, grab a fistfull of dirt and soil his jersey to look cool.

Because they won't let them wear the same cap all season.

Remember when linemen in the NFL did the same with their game helmets. Towards the end of the season they were really scared-up. I remember the Redskins Hogs's helmets looking like that.
